3800 Series II Engine VIN Location

I have a 2003 Impala LS and I need to find the VIN on my engine. Normally I would take it to the DMV and have them do it but I am military stationed overseas and do not have access to my DMV in Oregon. I found the VIN on the windshield and body, but cannot find the VIN on the engine. Does anyone have any idea where this is? I looked in the Haynes but it is no help...

The primary location of the VIN derivative for the 3800 L36 engine is in the center of the LH rocker arm or LH side of the engine in the oil pan rail area of the engine. (maybe around the starter)

The secondary location (1) of the VIN derivative for the 3800 L36 engine is on the engine block below the water pump but above the AC compressor.
