Radio Mute

I have a 2002 Jetta with a radio problem.
Originally the radio would die going over bumps but somehow it has sorted itself out and was working fine until today.

The only thing that shows up is the word "MUTE" nothing else works. If I press the power button it will go out.

Anyone have any suggestions?
