I'm finally settled in after my move overseas...time for a new project!
After checking out my OS Giken Fairlady build, a guy I work with wanted me to build a copy of his 1:1 ride...a Nissan 180SX, (soon to be a RHD converted 240SX). This one is going to be a bit of a long term project since my new job has severely cut into my build time. Also, he's giving me imputs along the way as he builds, and buys parts for his car. I'm shooting to get it close as I can, but a few things will be a little off since there really isn't the parts available in scale form, and I don't have the resources to make them...mainly his wheels...Origin DNA's, so Volk TE37's will have to work.
Like most of my builds, I started off fabbing up the engine...a SR20DET. I decided against the Aoshima, and The Parts box SR's because I feel that they have a lot to be disired in the looks department...I'm not settling for close enough! He currently has a red top SR in his car which he is yanking out to send back to the states. The red top head is a little bit simpler to fabricate because of the flat valve cover, and no VVT on the front, so I'm not complaining.
Here's the progress so far:
Block:

Short block assembly minus timing cover:
http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/2945/dscf5425t.jpg
And a few shots of it mocked up in the car:
http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/3076/dscf5432.jpg
http://img853.imageshack.us/img853/5862/dscf5435.jpg
This motor is 100% scratchbuilt by me. Still a lot more to go on the fab work. Right now, I'm concenterating on getting the components fabbed up and test fitted before finalizing the rest of the details...More to come...

Thanks guys!
I got a bit more done today. I fabbed up the valve cover, and timing chain cover...just the oil pan is left for the main parts. I made it so you could see the coil packs...that is when I get around to making them . I didn't get all of teh ribbing detail on the timing chain cover, but I feel that the effect is still funcional. Here's what I've got so far:

http://img847.imageshack.us/img847/4623/dscf5466.jpg
http://img576.imageshack.us/img576/9071/dscf5473.jpg
I still have more detail to add to the components. I'm just doing a little bit at a time so I don't get burned out.
Thanks for looking.

It's been a while since I've got back to this one. Last year was a busy for me.
As I said in the 3T-G thread, I'm going to take a break, and knock out some comision work...mainly this little Beast. It's been almost a year since I told my friend that I would build his car, so I need to get back cracking on it. Most of you know that I'm never really satisfied with any of my builds, so this one was not an exception. The more I looked at my block timing cover, head and valve cover, the more I didn't like what I saw. So, I decided to start all over from scratch. I fabbed up a new block, timing cover and an all new upper oil pan.
Here's a comparison of the two blocks:
http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/5010/dscf6091.jpg
http://img818.imageshack.us/img818/1961/dscf6089.jpg
and a couple of shots with my old head, and valve cover...for reference sake...(I'll be fabbing up new ones of those as well :wink):
http://img855.imageshack.us/img855/8343/dscf6065.jpg
http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/1097/dscf6068.jpg
http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/1167/dscf6070q.jpg
I like the way my new SR has turned out so much better than the old one...I feel that the proportions are more closer to the real deal than my old setup was.
And to close this post out...a couple of in-car shots:

Last weekend was a disaster for the SR :mad::mad: ...I just couldn't get anything right. So I put it away and let the week pass by. I got a three day weekend, so after recharging my batteries, I started at it again. I re-attacked the head, and valve cover after reworking the front profile of the engine block. Here's how it all turned out:
http://img192.imageshack.us/img192/1599/dscf6102b.jpg
http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/5232/dscf6106q.jpg
http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/8146/dscf6121v.jpg
Just about every detail is there from the CAS boss to the timing chain tensioner to the cutouts on the vlave cover flanges. There is one more detail that I cannot figure out is the valve that's behind the timing chain tensioner...it looks like it has something to do with the cooling system, but I cannot locate it in the FSM...it really driving me crazy that I cannot see what it looks like so I can model it :banghead:

I like the proportions a lot better than my old head and valve cover. There are a lot more details to add, but I got a little burnt out from the head and valve cover  ...off for the intake and exhaust before finishing the rest of the details up.

geist_casper...I do have another CA18DET in the woks, so stay tuned ;)...
My friend had a specific list of items he wanted on his motor, so after a few hours reserching, I got cracking on a Greddy/Trust lower oil pan sump, and football intake. He also wanted a S15 spec T28 turbo for this one since he is going to be building his real car the same way.

Your work is simply breathtaking! Just a basic question: how do you bend the styrene rod when making your exhaust header?
CrewDawg15
01-22-2012, 07:15 AM
Bending the rod can be a bit tricky. I've been using Evergreen 1.6mm (1/16") rod for the turbo manifold. For the front bend, I used a butane lighter. I rolled the rod between my fingers while holding it near the flame to get a uniform heat dissipation. As soon as I notice the rod start to droop, I removed it from the flame and bent it, You have to get your timing right because if the rod gets too hot, it will bunch up and the bend will not be uniform...it's all about timing, and it took me a few times to get the plastic heated enough to get a nice even bend. I just gradually bent the rod without heating it to get the bend at the turbo flange...you just have to know when you are bending it too much or you'll break it ;)
I have found that Evergreen, and Plastruct styrene to be soft and easy to bend, but Tamiya Pla Plate and shapes are really hard and brittle, so I don't use Tamiya rod that often for shapes I have to bend, but work great for strait work, or areas needing strength.

I have been marathoning the engine bay for the last two days almost strait (gotta eat sometime :evillol:). I mainly concentrated on reworking the wheelwells to get a better profile than the sqare one the Fujimi used for the chassis...I really cannot fault them since this kit IS supposed to be a curbside
...Fujimi never saw me coming :naughty:
I'm glad Fujimi did make the wheelwells really meaty (nearly 2mm thick in some areas) because I really dug in deep with my file to round out a somewhat rounded shape. So I re-worked the wheel wells, built up the sides, a firewall, fabricated new strut towers, built up a core support, and removed the dummy tranny and made a propper tunnel.
For reference, here's my new chassis, and one that has not been FuJimmyfied :evillol: :

...and how she looks close up:
http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/1279/dscf6183.jpg

and after:

I really haven't set a price yet. I usually see how my test casting turn out and go from there. Plus, I have to get my materials locally here in Japan...that gets pretty pricy compared to buying resin in the States. I'll just have to see when the time comes.

Impressive stuff you are showing us here. Could you tell me more about the techniques you use to build up a complex form like the engine block or valve covers? Do you start from a solid block and you carve away material or is there another way to do it?
If you have explained this before in another thread, then just point me to it.

Bring'n this one back!
I'm planning on updating this one regularly as I've got some time to work on it now. My friend that I'm building this for wants a car with a stripped out interior...that meant a lot of fabrication. Then, I went to finish the engine bay. I initially made it too short. I extended the front by 3mm, built a radiator support, and added some more stamped details. Here's how its looking so far:
http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff317/CrewDawg15/Ginger/IMAG0720.jpghttp://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff317/CrewDawg15/Ginger/IMAG0721.jpghttp://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff317/CrewDawg15/Ginger/IMAG0722.jpg
Sorry for the bad pics as they are taken with my phone. Now, to wait for the glue to dry before I can finish sand the chassis before primer.

Then, I went to finish the engine bay. I initially made it too short. I extended the front by 3mm, built a radiator support, and added some more stamped details. Here's how its looking so far:

Sorry for the bad pics as they are taken with my phone. Now, to wait for the glue to dry before I can finish sand the chassis before primer.
Thanks for looking!

It's been almost a year since I've updated this thread...I work at the "Speed of Me", so here's a few more updates.:evillol:
The body has been sprayed with 4 coats of Testors black lacquer, just setting it aside so the paint will have plenty of time to cure before polishing. I also fabricated a few bits for the engine bay such as brake and clutch master cylinders, fuel filter, and power steering reservoir by turning styrene in my trusty electric drill and shaping with a good ol #11 blade and sandpaper. I also plumbed the fuel and power steering systems as well as running vacuum lines for the engine. She's still have a ways to go...
