How painfully true. I have one as well.
It came with warped engine cover so I ordered a new part. Guess what? It is warped even more then the kit part. :shakehead
Good luck :)

Also watch the body and how it connects to the chassis, I had a bunch of problems with my copy.

I used small stripes of Styrene to prop up the engine cover to the main body, worked very well

^ You're doing it the opposite. You should paint the body first before you put on the decals. Makes it easier.

One tip I can advice you, and which cost nothing if you have a water base black paint, to bring more realism to the engine is to wash it:
dilute black in water not to thin it but to barely color water (try several dilution rates till getting what goes well the most for you), and brush it with a large brush wet of this mix, paint will slightly fill corners, holes etc and once water evaporated you get an effect close to a kind of "smoke" applyance, which gives a used look to any mechanical parts cutting down glossy look and revealing details and reliefs...
I personaly use Citadel colors from Games Workshop hobby, they are the best to start with, and I never changed and still use them BTW. They are in the same price range than any other colors (tamiya for example) and quite easy to find once you've located a GW store, and you can buy them through their website or hotline for sure.
And yes, I can only say that if you want your models to increase to a higher standard, you should paint the bodies and it's the first and only thing to learn and do before other ones, but don't worry too much, my first models weren't painted either, I even wondered why I should have painted them when geeting noticed of that point by other people, they didn't look bad at all...!! Just... plastic !!
But then I saw painted bodies models...! That was a kind of new continent discovery and make me understand why topaint bodies !!
Did you already meet someone else being able to show you his models ? did you already visit any modeling show or meeting ? you may learn a lot there too if you want to improve your results, and there you won't find any bad guys hidden behind a computer to only slam you instead of trying to teach you and advice you.
But you're the only one to decide what you expect and intend with modeling, if you get enjoyment with you models that's the most important things, build for you not for others.
But if you share your work you also have to know experienced modelers may react to your models and say a few things about your way to build you don't really want to hear or admit... or admit first.
Most of us I'm sure will do that to advice you and help you to improve your models.
I learnt a lot here too, so I'm with you at my turn and will advice you as far as I can if you need it and want it.

Great to see you tackling a plastic kit again (not that those paper ones arnt great & look difficult).
Yeah I agree with Rallymaster, a black wash will really bring your work to life, also detail painting will have a huge effect

it's the simplest way but you have to avoid glossy paint and oil based paint, I use a mat black water based paint from Citadel as already mentioned, and it works great.
if result doesn't please, just repaint the metalic base color and restart washing or just brush with water before paint dries...!
really simple and guaranted effects !! :grinyes:
Just try it.
another tip: if you don't have figures or modeling water based color, you can use the colors range used by small kids in school workshops. Don't know the english word for it but in french we call it "gouache".
I use this technic with several tones of colors to give used effect or burnt look etc etc.
