I'm driving on freeway about 30 miles from home everything is fine, when I get off ramp and stop at the light I notice my temp gage moves up like it wants to overheat...When I get back on the freeway ti goes back down.

Thermostat maybe???

I would be happy to look into this further for you. In order to do so, I will need the VIN for the vehicle as well as the current mileage. Please feel free to contact me via private message if you would like. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you.

Why do you need the VIN#? Seems everyone of ur posts requires one. :nono:

Seems to me all u would need is year and engine and symptom

are you able to check the radiator level...or just the over flow tank?

Because she's running a VIN-based check of recalls and service bulletins.

I heard GM was going to monitor web sites for "problems" with GM vehicles. We'll see how long that lasts. I'm going to have to check pistonslap.com to see whether anything useful has happened there...

where are you seeing the oil??in the radiator?
oil in radiator will normally be trans oil, from a bad oil cooler
antifreeze in engine oil normally head gasket
have'nt heard of intake failure for this on the 3.1l engine
like we are seeing on 3.8 & 4.3
how many miles on the engine?
is this the 1st time you had over heating troubles?

Not good, either a bad lower intake gasket or blowed head gasket.

Usually oil in the radiator and overheating would indicate head gasket depending where the gasket is leaking. Not sure if LIM will get oil in the radiator or not.

Not good, either a bad lower intake gasket or blowed head gasket.
Or a cracked casting.

Head cracks are common on the 3.1/3.4. Hell, head cracks are getting to be more common on pretty much EVERYTHING. The wall thicknesses are reduced for weight savings; and the strength/durability goes away with every ounce saved.

Checked the oil and trans fluid and both levels are good. And no discoloration. However when I take the radiator cap off I have what looks like sludge. I guess intake or best case senario clogged radiator???

do you have axcess to a pressure tester?
try pulling a coolant hose off(easiest 1)to see what it looks like
can you see anything in the radiator or just on the cap
that maybe dexcool that your seeing on cap?hard to tell from here

i'M THINKING YOU MAY BE RIGHT! I was reading up on another thread moments ago that the sludge is dexcool from air getting into the anti-freeze?

Yes radiator level is good
Not according to the photo you posted. Did you drain coolant out of the radiator before taking the photo?

Coolant looks green. Not Dexcool.

When was the last time the cooling system was flushed and the coolant replaced with fresh stuff?

First Guess: Plain ol' ordinary neglect. Use infra-red temperature "gun" to verify no cold spots on radiator when engine is running, fully warmed up, and the fans are NOT running. Flush coolant THOROUGHLY, open radiator and block drains to remove flush water. Inspect radiator for clogging/corrosion. Inspect hoses for deterioration. Clean crap out of overflow bottle. Install the coolant brand/type of your choice, in aproximately 50/50 mix with water. Replace rad cap--I like the lever-lock style for safety. See if the ugly stuff in the radiator comes back.

It is not dexcool, but on lable says it will work for any color coolant universal. I was using it to top it off. I have had the car a little over a year and have not given it a flush.

I will flush it out tomorrow and see what happens

I'm flushing my system, after 5 min looks like it's gonna overheat then fans kick in and needle starts going down. I look u8nder the hood and notice no water is going into my top hose. Hose looks like air being squeezed out... I turn off the car and hose goes back to normal.

I'm assuming my thermostat isn't opening up?

Ooooopppss!!! Sorry bout that! I didn't have the Rad plug in tight enough and the water was dripping into the pan... I just need to slow down. :p

if you were adding/mixing regular antifreeze to a factory dexcool system it will sludge up the entire cooling system!!!
the entire system including overflow must be drained & flushed good, probably a few times
until everything is cleaned.best to remove the thermostat while flushing
replace all hoses if possible along with cap & thermostat

Good luck mike

I'm on my fourth flush and found another bottle of Super Flush and fixin to pour it in. I don't have any transportation to the parts store so I can't get the cap and thermostat... :frown:

Schurkey is correct in that I am able to use the VIN to run a check for recalls and bulletins that may apply to your sitaution. It allows me to specifically look at those that would apply to your vehicle.
