have a 96 Chevy 1500 w/5.7 motor. Just today, I noticed that periodically my tachometer and speedometer won't work and trans won't shift right, and the "check gauges" will either be on or flicker. Plus, the light that shows on the transmission selector won't come on. I'm wondering if it might be the ignition control switch. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I guess it's really an ignition starter switch, part number 26036311.

Right, it's just called an ignition switch. I had to order one for my '95 last week due to no power to my accessories when I turned the key on: windows, radio, a/c blower, windshield wipers, torque converter won't lock up, even ABS.
It could also be a poor ground judging from you not having more problems, but the ig switch is a possibility.

do you have a good ground from moter to body? not the ground to battery.

I would lean towards the ignition switch. It supplies power down to your transmission and the shift solenoids. Hence part of the problem. I have not worked on a 96 in quite a while, but on the newer models they have a little box with like a turn dial in them that attaches under the lock cylinder and that is all that needs to be replaced.
