04 suburban e-brake

ok here goes, about a month ago i stepped on the e-brake to just use it as i always try to do so it dont lock up on me, and when i did i heard a pop and the pedal went to the floor. last night i crawled underneath it to see what i could find. the adjustment where the single cable meets the double cable is as far tight as it gets and looks so rusty i dont wanna touch it. it seems to me that the cable fell off something at the pedal somewhere somehow? is that possible or am i looking for a different issue, when i put the pedal to the floor the cable gets a little tighter, but to me not even close to try setting the brake! GRRRRR well any help will be appreciated

with your description this is how it goes when the cable breaks.

the area where the single cable connects to the double cable is what usually goes.

since the cables under are tight I would remove the park brake interior pedal unit , for the cable to have fallen out of the mechanism. could be this is also broken ..it is quite low quality..

just so you know you do not have an emergency brake...

you have a parking brake....that means it is to be used only when the vehicle is stopped and not on any steep grades ..I forgot what the spec is on how steep... its cheap crap ..

my park brakes failed under 20,ooomiles GM said thats normal ! GM didn't fix the problem ,,,,.I had to !

The cable may have popped off the cam attached to the pedal inside the cab...it might happen if there was enough slack for it to dislodge from the track.

You may end up having to loosen that rusty adjuster to get it to fit back onto the cam. Use a wire brush on what you can and spray it down with PB Blaster and turn carefully after letting it penetrate.

well after careful consideration i decided to tear into it lastnight since i had nothing better to do (wife was tryin to drag me to wal-mart) and when i get the pedal out i found the there is a broken, what i would call a return spring, so i am in the process of finding a replacement piece, im sure i will have to loosen the adjuster where the 2 cables meet to properly adjust the whole set up. i also took the back wheels off and checked out the actual brakes and everything looked aok, just adjusted the "park brake" shoes out a little bit to shorten the travel, so im my not so expert opinion i think it all looks ok in the back/bottum! well thanks for all of you'lls advice

I would recommend just getting the entire pedal assembly. They are only $50 even at the dealers. It all comes as one piece. You pop one out and put new one in.

Well in the end i found i had a broken cable. it was broke inside the rubber sleve/coating and i didnt notice it right away. Oh, and on this note if anyone knows anything about the pedal mechanism im looking for more info yet on it!!! i replaced the pedal and a cable and im in good working order i think all said and done (friend of mine got a discount on parts) i pad like $60 for the parts!!! GREAT DEAL

in post #2 I stated your issues here appeared to be a broken cable.

every year or so I put some oil and graphite mix into the cable shroud where the interior park brake pedal assembly is attached. this cable can bind up//rust//...good luck ..
