St. Anger

So I finally heard the long-awaited new track by Metallica, the first single from their highly anticipated new album. And I have to say... I was really disappointed.
I won't say why I think that, I don't want to be labeled as another former die-hard fan who is railroading them now. But man, it was exactly what I was hoping it wouldn't be. Damn.

I say wait until you hear the whole album , you know how radio stations like to play the most pop like track man

I thought the same thing. But I just keep thinking that the songs that are played on the radio are never a band's best.

that's definately true and that's why it's good to listen to the whole cd.....if you just hear the singles, you will miss out on the songs that sound really good

I heard the last minute of it, and i didnt think it was too bad. Once i listen to it a few times i know i'll like it. Same thing happened to me and Load. I know most people hate Load, but eh, to each their own.

I look at it like this : Metallica has been around for almost 20 years, they've put out a lot of great music, just because somethings now sound different shouldnt entirely surprise everyone. I mean sure, we all want to hear the same hard metal that used to come out, but bands change over time, and that's what they've done, some people dont like it, some people have no problem with it. I think they are still kickin ass and should deserve the uttmost respect for having lasted longer than other bands have and proved themselves as metal-gods. A lot of other great bands have used Metallica and groups like them as inspiration to play music, so to those who say, Metallica sucks now, I say " you know what? YOU SUCK."

Well I guess you guys are mostly more optimistic about their new album than I am. I have been a fan of them since 1988, three quarters of their time as a band since putting out their first record with Megaforce Records. And I know better by this stage in their career to get pumped after hearing a single track. Hearing St. Anger, the precedent for what to except with the rest of the album has been established.
Bands that are around for a long time should have lineage. Take let's say Megadeth, Anthrax, Slayer, Pantera, even Korn now. Listen to their earliest work, then come back to their most recent. You can tell that the music was written and recorded by the same band. Of course bands evolve and change through time. They would suck if they didn't! But they also have to stick to their guns, as the bands I have noted above have done (though perhaps past tense, with reference to Megadeth and Pantera). I listen to St. Anger, and I can't understand it. This is the same band that released Fade to Black? To Live is To Die? One? To me it sounds more like a track that a band like Trapt would record than Metallica.
I don't hate Load and Reload. If it was by any of many other bands, I would indeed like those albums, a lot. Until It Sleeps, Devil's Dance, Fuel, The Outlaw Torn, Bleeding Me, there are some great tracks there. However, go back and listen to Master of Puppets; listen to ...And Justice For All (which, by the way, I would still put as the #1 album in the history of metal). Now come back to St. Anger, and noted tracks off L and RL, and tell me with a straight face that you like them as well. Tell me that this is good music, worthy of being released by the band Metallica... I sure as hell can't do that. I'm with you, Jim. I can't kid myself, I'm sorry.

Exactly what he said. In the last 4 or 5 years have gone form die hard Metallica fan to not particularly caring. Won't be buying this one unless getting rave reviews. Bring back black baby! :ylsuper

I know what you are talking about man, isn't quite as good as the older stuff but when you look at it what is as good as the old Metallica? Not too many bands nowadays that in my mind can do what they did in the 80's and still have a massive following of fans, easily one of the best bands of all time.

Okay, so besides the fact that I have NO idea what the new songs even remotely sound like... I had to comment on this one: Seriously, if you'd been screaming like a MOFO for 20 years, do you REALLY think you would sound good thereafter? The answer is NO. His voice (by logic) should be nonexistant by now.
I guess I'll just have to find a radio so I can comment on the rest of this stuff......

Exactly- I'm really suprised he hasn't gone mute after all these years either- in fact seeing as most metal bands last upwards of 20 years it's a big feat indeed- I lose my voice after 5 minutes of yelling at incompetent people.
I'm used to bands changing thier style- it can be for the better- Korn are a great eample of that (Although Issues is still my favourite of thier albums) but Metallicas change has been far less flattering to thier music.

well maybe tired isnt the word i was looking for. Just sounded like he was trying to poud out too much vocal at once.
But for anyone who complains about teh song: Its fast and heavy, just what everyone wanted and asked for...so dont bitch now. It just has to grow on you. Plus there's the whole rest of the album to look forward to. :ylsuper

You're right, it is fast, it is heavy, and it sounds like they are mimicking a group of no-talent ass clowns!! Above all else, that is what bothers me, that they are so clearly imitating the popular sound of today, i.e. generally primitive and lacking in skill on their instruments. Hell, Hetfield doesn't even sound like he is staying in key!! It is such bullshit.
And for the record, that is not what I asked for. I asked for them to do an album for the fans, something that shows they can still rock like they used to. Give me the fast riffs and screaming guitar solos of The Four Horsemen. Give me the polished fury of To Live Is To Die. Give me the rich, intense, fill your speakers sound of Call of Ktulu. And they give me St. Anger. I think it falls short in every way, except that technically it's "fast and heavy." Give me Metallica fast and heavy, not shitbox musicians banging on their shit fast and heavy. Playing down to the amateurish level of the music that is most popular today is just insult to injury coming from them.
I'm done. For the record, I was pissed off before I even got home a few minutes ago, so that might be part of why I am so negative in this thread. But I can't get remotely excited about that track, that much is certain.

Well, i can see your point of view. I guess i can say that i wish there was more from this track, but hey, like i said, theres still an album left full o songs. Hell, maybe the title track on this album is the weakest of the songs, who knows. Only time will tell.
Im still looking forward to it.
