Is there a way to make the compressor kick on and take freon? How do I test the compressor to see if it is bad. Back in the fall the A/C was fine one day and then the next there was nothing. The clutch does not kick on. Did not try to fix it then. Now it is time for it so if anyone has any suggestions please reply soon.

Chances are the refrigerant has leaked out. Without it the compressor won't turn on. You'll have to check pressures. Your best bet is to take it to a shop and have them reservice the refrigerant and test if you've never messed with the system. It can kill you.

Lack of compressor action could be from a few different things. The first thing to do is pull static pressure of the AC system, if static pressure is too low, the compressor will not operate. Also if the compressor is old an warn, the air gap in the compressor clutch could be too great and the magnetic field would not be able to over compensate for that.

So there is no way to "hot wire" the compressor to make it kick on like you can on chevys?

You can just the compressor coil to see if it engages, but that's about it. There is a low pressure cycling switch and if the refrigerant in the system is low, it wont satisfy the pressure switch and not activate the compressor.

on my 1997 GC I can jump the compressor...99 should be the same. You should use a fused jumper. I made up two 5 ft long wires with alligator clips on each end. the clips on one end need to be large enough to clip onto the battery cables...the ones on the end you clip to the compressor have to be small enough to fit into the terminal plug.
Hook one wire to positive battery cable and the other end to one of the terminals at the compressor, Hook the other to the and negative battery cable and the other terminal at the compressor. Clutch should click and pull in. If it does click and pull in your clutch is good. Disconnect the negative wire at the battery, Sart the van hook the wire uo to the negative terminal, clutch should click again and the compressor should run. If it does run..you can begin to add R134. If it doesn't run when correctly jumped..you have a bad compressor.
To do this safely use a fairly stout gauge of wire like a 14' to fuse it wire a fuse holder into the positive wire and use a 30 amp fuse. This way if it dress to much current it will blow the fuse and not damage components. Good luck
