Fuel Pump

Anyone know how long a fuel pump on a corolla should last before needing replaced? I hear it is a tough job in replacing as it is inside the gas tank? and that the car will just stop working when the pump poops out.

We keep the tank filled most of the time except on long trips when we seldom let it get below a quarter tank.... does this help?

Thanks all for any good advice My corolla is a 96 by the way...
