Panel lines poll

i hate em. sometimes they can look good on darker paint with thin recessed lines, but for lighter colored or brighter colred cars, they suck

Well, sorry I disagree. They should always be there. But like you say on lighter colours blaxk panel lines are no good. But still they must be there, in a lighter colour though. ;)

I always use a color for panel lines that is suitable to the paint color the model is painted with, only dark colored models get black panel lines.

How can you get a car to look realistic if the panel lines aren't done?

Sometimes the panal lines on the model are so deep, that it looks darker than the rest of the car. You're right though, it makes the car look realistic.

I only do the hood and trunk, nothing else.

Thats what building models is all about.....everybody has there own ideas

Personally i think its a must, it's a technique thats been used for years in car modeling in order to add realism. I've yet to see a model made without them that doesn't look like it has something missing.

As for their use on lighter colours, i'd rather see black panel lines than none at all. Although to do them properly, other appropriate dark colours should be used.

I personally think it's a must. I used to not do any panel line (because my limited skills) but after comparing my model to someone else who got panel lines, my one looks really a toy and incomplete. After all, all real cars have panel lines
On light colour cars, just use grey instead of black paint to do the panel lines.


but well, if you don't like panel lines, just don't do it cos it's your model and you are the one who build it :) You don't have to worry too much what other ppl think.

I detail panel lines on all my models now, they look naked or unfinished w/o them. I use subtle darker shades of the body color to detail them. Black is reserved only for darkish colors, I look at my white/yellow models that I detailed the panel lines black and they are too distinct, too much contrast. Subtle is the key, you want them darker than the body but not too dark. Some people detail them black before painting, so that they are darker under the paint.

Even though I'm not a fan of black panel lines on light colors, they still look better than no panel line detailing at all.:)

I cannot imagine doing a car without them. You need to be careful to not make them look too heavy though. Racecars should always have the decal cut and the line drawn in at panel separations.

you should have "Sometime" in your pool.

I usualy do them and it look good, but on other kit I don't... it's more the look of the car than the color

Gotta have 'em. The car looks incomplete without them - sure the panel line colours need to be adjusted based on the body colour.

A real car has them, so a model car should have, it's as simple as that.

As an altenative to black on light colured cars, I've used grey to good affect.

If you want your model to look like a toy, leave out the panel lines. If you want it to look anything like the RL car, you've got to add panel lines.
