Improving MPG.

This is what I have:
2003 Oldsmobile Alero GL1.
2.2 L, 4 Cyl, Ecotec motor. 165,000 miles.

I'm getting 300 miles on a 14.1 gal. tank, and I would like to get more than that if possible. I was debating on getting a truck, or AWD car, but decided it would be better to keep what I have now, it will be paid off in six months.

What can I do to get better gas mileage for my car, and what would be the price range I would be looking at?

Tune up with delco pligs and boots. Wix air and fuel filters. Proper tire pressures, and have an alignment.

300miles per tank seems a little low for the ecotec.

I thought I got closer to 400 per tank, but that slowly decreased. About a month ago my buddy who knows a lot more about vehicles than I do said that my wheel bearing was going out, and we replaced that, it's quieter now, and he said that it could have been affecting my mileage, but I don't see any change.

What are the "boots"?

Boots, probably not the right word for them, but when you pull the coils off to change the plugs, make sure the plug boots are in good shape for each cylinder.

How is your fuel pressure regulator? Pull the vacuum line off and see if any gas squirts out when you turn your key to on position. How is your start ups?

The start up is fine, (when it starts) I have had to jump it probably 10 times since the beginning of Winter. I need a new battery, but can't afford one right now, hopefully in a couple of weeks.

I know something has to be drawing power from the battery to keep killing it. If I don't start it every day, or every other day, I end up needing to jump it.

Can you define "good shape" for the plug boots? What am I looking for to know if they should be replaced. I've owned the car since 2006, and haven't had to replace the plugs/ boots yet.

The big issue with reduced fuel economy is the weather especially up North. It should get better when it warms up more.
