Longtime member, usually find answers before I have to post.
Niece just picked up a decent 1997. Little rougher than I was hoping since I am going to be helping her work on it. (She will help, deer hunting lil lady not afraid to break a nail.)
Question: Has a 4" lift and what she calls a ton of steering play... I hate working on steering issues; but will if it is not a complete tear down. I am replacing the power steering pump this weekend. Appreciate any insight on what I should check first on the steering play issue; any past experiences?
This weekends list:
1) U-Joints
2) Power Steering Pump
3) 4WD not engaging - trouble shoot
4) SES light on - gather codes
6) Check vitals: fluids, plugs, wires, filters, etc.
Thanks in advance.

steering box may be worn especially with off road use.
first check the usual wear items ,idle arms, tie rods, lower balljoints, uppers also . then you have control arm bushings worn out .

I second Pitman & idler arms and tie rod ends. For the idler arm, also make sure the support bracket is attached securely to the frame and has not become fatigued. Looseness here can make it feel sloppy and changes the steering geometry enough to put stress on the rest of the linkages.

I would also check the rag joint for wear.
