1990 olds 88
I just received code 34(There was no MAF signal for over 4 seconds while engine was running.)
Does this mean that it's faulty and must be replaced? or Is it possible clean or repair it. It looks like an expensive part.

I've had this on a couple of Buick Series I 231 engines. The electrical connector for the MAF is just as suspect as the MAF itself. As I recall, a replacement MAF is a couple hundred bucks.

The check engine light went off on the next start. It seems to be running ok...I guess I'll just keep my eye it

Check engine light came back on....I guess I will try cleaning before replacing. Do I have to use MAF cleaner or will brake cleaner or other solution work?

yes you should get the cleaner like you clean throttle body with you can get it at autozone or about any parts store. while your doing that i would look inside throttle body at thje butterfly if it's dirty clean that as well.

I cleaned the maf sensor....No code yet. The car does hesitate sometimes when accelerating as it always has

The car seems to stumble and actually did stall one time when I started tapping on the MAF while running. Is this a conclusive test that the maf is bad…Justing try to be sure since I’m going to pay a hefty price for a replacement MAF.
Thanks

Went to the junkyard and found a MAF for $25....Installed and it seems to be running ok

Well, the car started running bad and I got the code 34 again. Its running like does when the MAF is unplugged. What are the chances that I have a bad MAF(just replaced from junkyard) or there is a problem with the wiring.

Look at the harness connector, they tended to pull apart or corrode as Blue Bowtie pointed out, and yes the junk yard unit could be bad, why not?
