abs, traclight and brake light on

98 Century 3.1 202k

The abs, trac control and brake light are on. Brake fluid to the top, have set and released parking brake several times and still on. I have not checked for codes as I don't have a abs capable scanner.

The owner mentioned tonight that at times whenn trying to start nothing happensand ten will retry and starts. I have not checked the battery end connections yet.

Here is the kicker. When backing up maybe 10 feet or more the lights all go off. Could this be associated with a neutral saafety switch or ignition switch. ( just a thought) I will study a wiring diagram also. I have done some extensive research tonight but found nothing with symptoms like this.

A bad ignition switch can cause the ABS and Trac control lights to come on so thats a possibility. Do you have any other symptoms?

No other symptoms to my knowledge. Not long ago she mentioned that at times it sounded like tire rubbing on ice build up when driving. Could this be a bad wheel bearing, but why would this affect the red brake light also? I have driven the car a couple times just around a few blocks and did not hear anything, maybe I should take out to a sparsely driven road and listen for a bad bearing.

What is confusing to me is that the abs, trac, and red brake light go off after backing a few feet. I should add that the brakes seem to work fine when I drove.

Even with ABS not working the conventional braking should be good. ABS wheel sensors could be an issue but problem is an ABS capable scan tool should be used like a GM Tech 2. However, you can ohm out wheel sensor with a multimeter or check comparative output with wheel turned, high of 100 millivolts (AC). For static resistance check look for around 1K ohms. Also, check out the wiring harnesses and electrical connectors.

ABS is tested in two parts. Initial is at ignition to ON. The second part is when the vehicle is moved and this is when the wheel sensor outputs are tested.
