I have a 2002 s10 crew cab. 4.3, 4wd. 172,000 miles. I have a growling noise coming from the front end. Can't pinpoint exactly where. When I accelerate it disappears, and starts again when I let off the gas. If I put it in 4wd it doesn't make the noise. I replaced the front passenger wheel bearing hub, but that wasn't the problem. Help!

What about the driver side bearing? Generally, wheel bearings can be identified while driving, when turning the wheel in one direction it will get louder and can seem to disappear when turning the other direction. Are you noticing such a pattern? With a driver side bearing failing, we would expect the noise to get worse while turning right.

The driver side bearing replaced a few months back. Turning the wheels either direction makes no difference.

If the hub bearing was making the noise turning the steering wheel would change the pitch.
most likely a drive train problem . check axles and those bearings.
what transmission in this ?
