Hey guys...Service Engine Soon light came on the other day and I took it to Autozone and got these codes. They both seem to point to the EGR. Where and in what order would you guys start troubleshooting these codes? Thanks!

Well if I worked at Autozone I'd have to say buy an EGR valve!
P1404 - Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Closed Position Performance
P0404 - Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Open Position Performance
Seems odd to have both these codes at the same time. Was there one that was Pending? and one was stored? I suppose you don't know off the top of your head since Autozone scanned it.
I would begin by removing the EGR valve and cleaning the carbon with carb cleaner. Making sure the Pintle on the EGR moves freely.

Cleaned the EGR Valve pintle. It did'nt seem to be stuck at all in the first place but I cleaned it pretty good. I cracked the snap clip on the EGR sensor though. Is that something terrible?

Whats an EGR sensor? LOL!
Do you mean the little clip on the EGR valve plug? As long as its plugged in, and won't unplug on its own, it should be ok.

Ha ha. There seems to be some sort of plug that clips into the EGR Valve. I'm probably referring to it by the wrong name but I believe it has to be what tells the car that the EGR pintle was stuck? Sorry tblake. Let me know if I'm way of base on this one.

I'm getting both codes on my 2001 Impala as well. did Cleaning the EGR Valve work for you? Or did you have to do something else to fix the problem?

I had these same codes on my 2001 GP GTP and I replaced the EGR valve and they didn't go away. I spoke with my mechanic and everything he could find for the 1404 code was that the PCM needed to be flashed with the newest software.
I had that done at a GM Service Center ($95.00) and poof, no more 1404 error codes.
The P0404 code is the EGR valve and replacing mine had the code go away and has not come back. Make sure you spend the money and get the OEM part from a dealership or GM parts discount website (there are plenty of them).
My suggestion would be to replace the gas cap and then get the PCM flashed(which resets the SES light anyway). If these codes come back up, then replace the EGR valve. If all else fails then an EVAP large leak smoke test might need to be performed.

Sorry for not answering this sooner. For some reason I didn't get an email saying that someone posted in this thread. Cleaning the EGR Valve did not work for me. I had to get an EGR Valve which did fix the code. I got an OEM EGR Valve from one of the discount GM Parts web sites online. Check as many as you can because I remember there being a huge difference in the prices. One had a 25 dollar shipping cost for it so even though it was cheaper it would have costed more to get to my door.
