If I pull the head can't I find TDC just by looking at the top of the piston and when it's at the top that's TDC isn't it ? Also when putting the head back on do I have to put each piston at TDC (after I put the push rods in) and tighten the rocker arms?
I neglected to say work is being done on an inline 6 (4.0)

THANKS
for your help and advice!

Usually you want TDC, befor pulling a timing belt, or head.

1) I usually remove the spark plug on cylinder 1, and put a heavy duty paper wadding in it's place.
2)Turn the engine over very slow until the paper wad pops!
3) Your engine is now @ TDC on cylinder 1, and check all Timing marks befor removal.

@ TDC on a four stroke engine during the power stroke both intake & exhaust valves are closed, and the piston is at the top.

Hanes, Chilton, and http://www.alldata.com Auto repairs should have the torque spec's + seq.

By golly that was a wonderful little idea about the paper wad. Sometimes I can make things hard, I appreciate you making it easy for me. Thanks again.
