Fuel pump resistor

How long can I run with it bypassed, and whats where is the best (cheapest) place to get one?

Tim probably indefinitely or until the fuel pump burns out but I doubt that. The '01 and up GTPs have different fuel pumps that run in single speed with the full 12 volts applied.

See link below for parts source:

Thanks Bob. I wonder if changing out my pump after christmas had something to do with the resistor burning out. Or maybe its juts a coincidence.

Where do you think would be a good spot to relocate it to? I was trying to think of somewhere where it will get a stream or air when driving.

ah finally tblake isnt a mister know-it-all! just playin. anyway, i dont know about the part listed above, but when i had mine replaced, the wires were long enough to mount it on the firewall where the wiper motor assembly is housed. it has plenty of room to stay cool up there. i dont know if the PFYC one can be relocated or not, however.

Hi Tim,

I wish I could have helped but I really have no idea about GTP specific stuff. ;)

Relocating the resistor close to the wiper assembly sounds great, if there would be any chance to install it close to the radiator that would be great too. It will depend on how long the harness is or if you're willing to install aftermarket wiring.

Best regards,

Oscar.

There used to be a relocation kit available but I don't see it anymore. It had the special wiring harness extension. The inner fender in the engine compartment works fine.

Bob, from what I read, the new part number, 88951182, that supersceeded (sp?) the old one, now comes with long wires that plug into the stock resistors plug. See link.

http://www.rmsautoparts.com/proddetail.php?prod=88951182

Sounds like you need to place it somewhere away from other wires and plastic because from what I hear it heats up. So I don't know if I should try finding a good location on the core support or just put it somewhere near the old one and zip tie the wire up.

You saw the wonderful news over on the alero forum I see..... 2nd pump this year!!!!!!!! (and its only february).

Tim,

I can also suggest you to buy some heatsink silicon grease (available at most electronics store), put some on the back of the resistor and attach it to any metallic part (fender, frame, etc.) that way the heat will be dissipated by the metallic element and your resistor will be cooler.

Best regards,

Oscar.

Hey oscar, good suggestion, I have some arctic silver heatsinc compound left over thats used in PC's, do you think that would work, or would the elements wash it away?

I can't be sure about elements washing it away, but I've used strong solvents on it and haven't had problems with it just let it dry overnight.

I don't know how it is supposed to be originally held in place but, It would be even better if you could somehow add a bolt or two to it so it keeps some pressure on the compound and hold it in place too.

I don't think the issue was the part overheating but being in a bad location subject to moisture and the elements. Corrosion, etc.

It only affects '97-'00 GTPs since GM got rid of it in 2001 and up.

Hey Tim, why don't you just use the casper fuel pump re-wire???? it eliminates that issue.

I hadn't thought about that. I will have to read up on it. Does it run the pump constantly in high speed mode? How easy is it to install?

rickisrad

it is cake to install. you just run from the peg on the fuse box through a grommet in the firewall under the door moldings and into the trunk. you do not have to splice any wires. It does not run the pump on high all the time, it has better gauge wiring for a more consistent voltage feed.

Maybe he got a fuel pump at AZ for 280, but it must have been the Airtex brand cause rockauto had the best price on a delco pump at 350.00. Regardless, the pump is not my problem so his post is irrelevant.

Can anyone help me locate my old resistor? Do I have to remove the inner fender on the passenger side?

rickisrad

It is in the engine compartment fuse box. the diagram for the resistors are on the lid of the box

I think your thinking of the relays. I'm looking for the resistor. I think its mounted to the frame on the passenger side.

ohh yeah- sorry, it is mounted on the passenger side fender area. here is a link for replacement.

Ah! That's the same link I was thinking of when I first saw Tim's post.

Good one Rick!

Tim, did you get the rewiring kit?

Oscar.

thanks guys,

Oscar, I got a used one locally for 20 bucks from a guy who had his 99 GTP t-boned. Its the second design where the resistor has a 2 foot long cord on it and the end of the cord plugs into the harness on the car.

When it warms up and dries up in MN a little, I'll get it in.

Got the resistor in on easter. Just haven't followed up yet. The old one is mounted near the washer fluid bottle. You need to remove the inner fender and bottom plastic piece to gain access. Its secured with a 10mm bolt that I used a ratchet wrench on. Technically you wouldn't even have to remove the old one, you could just unplug it and plug in the new one and mount it in a different location. The plug you can gain access to by removing the passenger side headlight. Its clipped to a the inner fender. The new one's resistance if my memory serves me correctly was right around .7 ohms. So I suppose if you could find a resistor at an auto parts store that is right around that spec, it should work.

Here is a picture of my old one when it came out. (in pieces). The wire was alread seperated which is probably what caused the failure.

Thanks for the update Tim! I am going to take a peek at mine if it ever stops raining to see what condition it is in.

Rick, they stopped using them in 01 when they went to a single speed pump so if your talking about your 04, it doesn't have one so you dodged a bullit there.

I did not know that..... no wonder I never had a problem in my 04s :0 Thanks for the info
