2002 Cavalier Headlamp Problem

First of all, I realize this topic has been discussed quite a bit but I seem to have a different twist to my problem.
The the low and high beams stopped working on my daughter's car (2002 Cavalier LS Sport) as well as the daytime running lights. If you pull the blinker lever toward you and hold it (momentary high beam), the high beams would light up. But clicking it to keep it on the high beam setting would not work. The fog lamps work fine.
I checked the headlamp fuses as well as the bulbs and they are ok. I've read on other posts to look for broken wires around the battery. I pulled the battery and headlights but I still couldn't really get under the battery tray to see very well. I felt around the best I could but didn't find anything that I thought might be a problem.
I put the battery back in and when I pulled the blinker lever back, the high beams did not work but now I hear the driver side automatic lock trying to lock/unlock. It does it every time I pull the lever back.
Now I seem to have made things worse. (typical with me an cars) I had also been thinking the headlamp problem might be due to the headlight switch assembly but because I don't think that would have anything to do with the automatic lock problem that just started, I'm thinking it may be a short somewhere. I just don't really know where else to look with minimal tools and minimal automotive skills. ???
Any thoughts or ideas? Thank you

This morning, I turned on the wipers and heard a clicking/grinding sound from what appeared to be in the steering column and also the drivers side auto door lock tried to do an lock/unlock procedure. The wiper did not move. After I did that once, I then the headlight again worked when I pulled the turn signal lever back to the momentary position. The wipers then began working as normal again. It looks like I'm back to my original problem now so I am not sure if unhooking the battery caused this secondary issue or if in fact they are related.
My non-automotive brain is now thinking it may be the headlight switch in the steering column. The reason I think that, is that if I can get the headlights to work by pulling back on the turn signal bar in the momentary position, the headlights will light. If there was a short in the wiring, this wouldn't happen would it?
Thanks for any and all tips/advise/suggestions/ideas/etc.

Problem solved. I replaced the headlight switch and all is working find now. I had to take the air bag off but I didn't have to take the steering wheel off as some instructions will tell you to do.
