Stuck Transmission?

I just drove to the store w/o any rumbling, wirring, squeeling, clacking or clanking of any kind. The only hint was a "stuck brake" feel in taking off. The "Hold" button is off. I get back into the car and put it in drive. I get a stuck to the road feel. The wheels are trying to move, in fact the right rear is squeeling, and shifting me sideways. After moving a few times from forward to reverse and going nowhere, I shift to 4X4 Hi, then Lo, with no 4X4Lo light coming on, and still not moving the car. I jack up the left rear. Dangerous, I know, but grabbing the wheel in park, it rocks back and forth a 1/2 inch like it's not free wheeling. I put it in FWD and RVS a few times and finallly it starts to rotate sluggishly, then fast. Still no sounds of any kind. I lower the car and drive home with no problem. I never feels like the four-wheel drive is working, but it's mostly good in two-wheel. The only indication I get that something is not right is the "brake on" feel when I start to take off, then a little sound like I just overcame a stuck wheel.... What gives, my four-wheel friends???

Yup....brake lining has separated from the brake shoe....pull the brake drum out and verify.

or..... you have weak or broken shoe return springs in your drum brakes.
Either way, you are probably looking at new brake shoes and all hardware. (springs, clips etc)

..and the easiest way to separate the brake drum from the shaft is this:
...jack up the wheel and LEAVE tire on
...pull the little hub cap out using a large flat screwdriver
...remove the four center shaft nuts
...use a heavy object to kick the tire sideways. This will unstick the brake drum from the flange...and hte whole wheel and drum can be taken away as a whole if you wish. YOu may have to giggle with it somewhat.
...Otherwise, you would have to remove the 2 phillips screws from the brake drum....these screws DO NOT hold the drum to the shaft: they are just there to be used as a tool : you would have first to uncrew them out(generally using acetylene torch to get them unstuck) ....then screw them back tight and tighter in the 2 other holes and use them to pull and unstick the drum as they contact the flange behind. I found the other way easier and the screws just stay where they are....
By the way, brake lining gets separated from the shoe when there is a slow brake fluid leak from the wheel brake cylinder....

I appreciate your wisdom and expertise. I've not yet seen a lining separate from a shoe, but I reckon anything is possible with the abuse this Sportage had before I bought it.
The weird thing is, I'm not hearing anything stick, scratch, or drag, except some of the time when I first start out. I'll look for some brake fluid, good advice, thanks.

:runaround:
After a trip to a Tire Shop, and told the brakes were fine, the hardware and etc. was in good shape, no delamination. I proceeded out of the parking lot, and it stuck again. I had to back up to unstick it. Then take off normally and it ran fine. Next day, same thing.
Next day, I sold the darn thing for $2000 bucks and will likely never buy another one.
