V8 question

Hi, how are you?

As you know (or not) im building this kit:

Few days ago i was asking about fenders and all that...but now i have a doubt about the engine, what engine does this kit have?...why i am asking? because i want to cut the gearbox and do a new one from scracht but since i dont know the model of the engine i dont know what gear box model should be copy

Im from argentina and here the V8 engines are not very popular, so is a little complicated to ask here about the engine....looking at photos and the assembly guide of revell i know is not a flathead, but what engine is, and what gearbox should i check to scracth build it?

That is a "Small Block Chevrolet" as used from 1955 to the 1990's. It is NOT an "LS" type engine used in current Corvettes and Camaros. The correct transmission would be a "Muncie" 4 speed or GM "Turbo 350 or 400" automatic.

You're welcome and yes, it's very common. Ford hot rods can have Fords, Chrysler Hemis and six-cylinder engines too!

Just Google American magazines like Hot Rod, Popular HotRodding and CarCraft-they will give you much good reference material.

A little more information on why the small block chevy, or SBC (not to be confused with southwestern bell communications...nevermind) as I will call it from here on, is used so often in the hot rod world. It was claimed to be the best builder motor for making good power on low budget. They were very plentiful, as it was available in most every GM v8 rear wheel drive vehicle from 55 to the late 90s.

So...cheap, plentiful, makes great power with relatively few modifications, reliable, good transmissions to bolt on behind it were readily available. It's a no brainer.

Comments about this motor are that you can go to any local grocery store or gas station and buy parts for it. and for the most part was true up to the late 90s.

You will find in your research that a 2 speed powerglide transmission was used in drag racing a lot, also as stated, muncie 4 speeds. Most often in hot rods, a 4 speed or the turbo 350/400 trans is used since there is so much aftermarket support and they too are very reliable, common, cheap units.

:icon16: I have a mongram 33 ford , that came with chevy small block , with 350 turbo behind it, i'm taken it out and replace it with a blown ford flathead, but the real thing i want you too wacth out for, since i live and breath chevs, look at your engine very close, mongram made there engines backwards, there is no starter on the left on the engine they model after late model 350, there is a few starters on the left for chev engines , but more for the 4 cyls , as used in vegas crowsworth's ect, so something else too wacth out for when detailing, chev was oil filter left , starter right, unless your pro dragger , then its on front ,so i guess its depends on the model kit and make you get that factors in, but for me no matter what model car, a ford should have a ford engine and chev should have a chev engine it and so on down the line, but thats my own thing:nono: ,Everett.

Thanks for the info...but i didnt understand you 100%...if you look the real chevy small block from the transmision view you see the starter on the right?

Because my engine has the starter and the fuel pump on the right and the oil filter on the left - always looking from the gearbox -
