I took my Bongo for Single Vehicle Approval yesterday. because the Japanese De-registration Document didn't show a type approval it had to have a steering aid fitted and be tested as a Disabled vehicle. the vehicle I nspectorate are to close this loophole very soon and this could make Bongo's Very difficult to Import and register. Unless someone importing them has other info then the tester said it could be the end of the line for Bongos.

Also Bongos Need Van Tyres on the rear as the axle wieght When empty exceeds the load carrying ability of car tyres, i was only made aware of this when mine faile it's SVA.

Tara for now

I checked this out. This loophole is indeed to be closed, but fear ye not! As long as it has an elevating roof, and the importer is a motor trader, then it will be classified as a campervan and will not require the test. But it does mean that importing one yourself will become even more difficult.

I spoke to the Vehicle inspectorate prior to my test and to be veiwed as a camper van it must have some permanent funiture fittings.

So it may be only unconverted van that are treatened?

Hi Guys
I'm new to this site but it is a cool source of Knowledge re the Bongo's I have since discovered. I have owned a Bongo Friendee for 3 weeks and when I collected it once prepared by the dealer, I asked for a copy of the SVA cert. Don't need one as its registered as a camper I was told. No permanant fittings but lifting roof and blinds and the seats that convert to a bed. Maybe these are enough to clasify as a campervan. Any comments?

Did you get any documentation? Who did you buy it from? And are you in the owner's club?

I am a member of the owners club, The log book has just come back saying "Camper van" but no mention of Bongo, So I assume the DVLA wrer happy with what Imperial Motors put on the registration documentation. All very confusing
