Suspension question

My son drives a 1996 Grand Am SE with 150,000 miles on it.
The suspension is spongy...he probably needs new struts/shocks.
Here's my question, though...can the bouncy suspension cause a problem with torque delivery to the front wheels?
The engine and transmission seem fine, but the car seems to lose torque/power when the car "bottoms". And, it makes more engine/transmission noise when the car "bottoms."
Just to be clear, it isn't bottoming out or anything. I'm just talking about when you feel more weight in your seat.

I'm thinking that the connection between the transmission and the wheel can only handle so much flex in the suspension, and we're pushing it to its limit.
Does that sound right? Will shocks/struts likely fix this problem?
