Silverado transmission

Maybe somebody can give me a ballpark figure on a transmission replacement for my p/u. I have been told it is a valve body issue and I might as well have the whole trans done.
I have a 2000 Silvy 4.8, 460E trans, 4 wheel drive, ext cab with 120,000 miles. The body and engine are great on it so a trans is a lot cheaper than a monthly payment. I live in the northeast. I don't tow, race or abuse my equipment.
If anybody has a place not to go, let me know or a good shop in PA.

post your transmission issues here. some members will have good details on what it may be.
first get the OEM drive train failure codes pulled with an oem drive train GM capabile scanner..post here with what the issues are .
If you did do , your fluid filter changes 2 0r 3times over this 120,ooomiles it should not be too bad with normal usage..

Valve body issue sounds like the code P1870 (if your SES came on or if the transmission has been shifting from 1st to second pretty hard), common on transmissions from 1999-2000 trucks. 01+ trucks will have it this issue also but only with tons of miles on them. You can grab a trans from a junkyard for less than $700, make sure it from an 01+ and less than 100k miles though.
Or you can spend the money that you would on rebuilding the trans to factory specs and get a Performabuilt or FLT transmission. Either one is worth it and last longer than factory spec'd transmissions.

well the problem is at 45-55 mph it keeps surging up and down. I had it to a dealer a year ago and he said it wasn't throwing any codes. I have been using it since then and I have gotten used to it, but now it is getting more annoying and I think it is affecting the gas mileage big time. I keep saying I will use it until it quits and it seems like it might be soon. I was looking to get a rebuild put in and I didn't have any idea how much they cost. I am figuring about $2500. I am trying to stay away from the tranny chains.

If it's surging like you are describing I'd check the the fuel delivery system too. The fuel pump or clogged fuel filter can keep it from running right, or even the fuel pressure regulator.

measure the fuel pressure , drive the vehicle monitor fuel pressure.
when doing this monitor the engine vacuum , make sure it is not the engine.
engine issues can cause the transmission to go wacky..pcm is always tweaking the drive train /engine ..

thanks for the tip on the fuel pressure. It might be the problem because it is not giving a code. I will check that out before i get a transmission job.
