d. pwr/htd. mirror not working

2005 Sub 1500LT. Driver side power, heated, auto dim, turn signal (what other bullshit I don't know) mirror isn't responding to any switch commands. Passenger side works fine. All other door/window functions work fine.

Mirror dimming goop is starting to run down; bottom of plastic looks like it was overheated and slightly melted. I pulled the glass off and everything inside looks clean. I HAVE LOOKED EVERYWHERE FOR A FUSE AND FOUND NOTHING! Operator's manual...NADA; 3 different maintenance discs...NADA; Haynes book...NADA. I see a fuse location for a 2002, but nothing for 2005. The 2003-2005 disc shows no fuse that I can identify to the mirrors.

This is INSANE! I'm beginning to hate GM more than any car company I ever bought from.

Apparently, there is no fuse for each mirror.....maybe the one listed under SEO for both mirrors, but that's meaningless. So, I tried to pry up the door switch module from the door panel to check the mirror switch (looks so simple in the book) but NOOOOOOOOOOoooooo...the damm thing won't come out from under the front of the side panel. All the pegs popped off upward, but something is holding it tight on the front corner. Do I just force it harder and risk breaking some inane, unnecessary, cheap plastic clip? OR, is there some secret manuever to get the damm thing off?

As you can tell, I'm p.o.'d.

remove the driver door panel , then you can remove the mirror. screws on bottom of panel and under the door lever plastic pop out. the panel must be lifted up. window open helps. then you can remove the triangle piece covering the mirror screws..this is easy stuff..

getting at the mirror piviot spring .///now that is a tough one . need lots of patience !

the select switch could be bad left/right...

I'd like to make sure the mirror is getting power through the switch before I take the whole assembly off. I already have the glass out. The motors and everything around them are surprisingly clean. Of course, this door was replaced about 6 months ago with one from a 2002. I am pretty sure the mirror functions wiorked when I bought it, and my wife says she remembers the turn signal function working.

Ordinarily, I would check the power through a fuse, but since that's not possible (another one of GM's assinine technical decisions) I thought I'd better check the switch itself. I have read a few threads that turned out to be bad or dirty switches. This one works in the center (at least it did once) for the right side folding function, and it works for the right side mirror movement. That leaves me thinking the switch is dirty, partially disconnected, or malfunctioning.

I don't think I should have to remove the whole panel to get the switch module out. But there must be one peg or clip holding the front corner that needs to be released somehow.

Surely, someone on this forum has had a similar problem and had to remove the switch module (without taking the whole panel off).

what do you mean took the window out why ? window broken ? how did you remove the window without removing the door panel ?

I didn't take the window out. I took the mirror glass out of the housing. It comes out fairly easily...especially compared to the panel or switch module.

Yes. The center of the mirror is held by a circular clip/gasket about 4" in diameter. I pushed on the bottom of the glass to expose as much of the top edge as possible. It only takes a good blade...nice wide screwdriver or a wood chisel...pushed between the glass and the motor assembly/case edge. A twisting motion rather than prying will pop it loose. A little patience helps. There are several wires attached to the mirror for heat, turn signal, and maybe the electrochomatic dimmer. Just pull the plugs apart and voila!...the mirror comes free to expose everything inside the casing.

thanks , my driver mirror works great , but has a crack in it lower left corner. when things warm up here I'm gonna try it ..

The DDM fuses are good and the switches themselves seem to be working fine. Then, my son decided to trace back the wires from the mirror to the power source/switch. When he tugged on the mirror wiruing harness it came out of the door NOT CONNECTED TO ANYTHING. Hmmmmmmmm.

So, I pulled the door panel and we searched for the rest of the harness connection to the switch module (DDM). NADA...ZIP...nothing...nyet...no stinkin' connector wires. The lamebrains that reinstalled the door never replaced the rest of the wiring. F'ing morons!

Anyway, if any of you has a source for the mirror (8 pin female) connector to the DDM (10 pin) connection at the switch block, please let me know. Thanks.

It gets a little worse: I just got off the phone with a parts guy at a local GM dealership and he couldn't find ANY pigtail/harness/connector between the mirror and the DDM. he thinks it should come from the main door harness to the mirror pigtail. I sure didn't see any loose connectors anywhere with the panel off. I even called AC/Delco and they said they don't service the main harness connectors..only the switches and those small connectors.

And......you were right. The panel removal should have been done first. It just seemed so simple. Yeah...right! :(

Just pulled my harness out of the door.....NO connecting wires or end piece whatsoever for the mirrors. Has a "Assembled in China" label on it with part numbers 5077-LH and Z00015077. Interestingly, a date of 05-25-04, which would mean this is the original harness???? How could that be??

no reason to panic....go to scrap yard and find a vehicle like ours truck /suburban etc.. and see how it is connected and get what you need ..take some pictures of all this..

The problem as I can determine from MUCH wasted time and research is that the mirror is from a 2002 (probably came with the '02 door) and has a totally different pigtail. There is no harness that can link that connector to the '05 harness or DDM. SO...salvaging the mirror (replacing the glass) doesn't even help. The only thing I can use is the body color painted housing panel.

I spent the last few days looking for a replacemant 2005 mirror with the same options my truck should have had. Power, power folding, turn signal, dimmer, heated, puddle light, body color body, memory, makes toast and pours beer....

You get the idea. Anyway, dual 10 pin connectors that go directly to the DDM, AND a big, fat price tag of course. The cheapest I've found through the dealer is about $450. Some aftermarket stuff runs about $300 and up. Wreckers want just as much.

I need to find a good replacement for half that. I don't need all the functions, but the power adjustment is obviously a must. After that, the dimming helps me a lot at night, the turn signal is a good idea, the heat I've never needed, the power folding is a bit gimmicky, and the puddle light seems kinda dumb. I guess that's my prioritized list. If anyone has one to sell just post up and we'll be in business.

Got the new mirror on. I found one with everything....including the beer cooler....for just over $230 shipped. I swapped the black textured panel for my "platinum" or "titanium" or whatever color it's called and it works fine. I had enough of it for now, though, and I'll wait until my son gets home to reinstall all the switches and the panel.

OK..final report I hope.

Replacing the door panel and wiring as a bitch. It came off so easily, but obviously the geniuses at GM had something more sinister in mind for me. There was no water deflector plastic sheet so I had to improvise with some of my Road Wrap adhesive film (remind me to tell you about that stuff later). Anyway, eventually the connections were made and the panel got back into its place.

The mirror works great...even the "power folding" function. The blinker will probably be used to keep me awake on long stretches of desert at night. Whoopee!

Now, on to the pos sliding sunroof panel that won't come forward and...whatever's next.

And, I do have a good power mirror that's for a 2002 and ?. It will need a glass because the auto dim stuff is leaking inside this one. It's apart, but I'll reassemble it for the right price...lol.
