I don't have a lot of information to go by, but I'd like some advice if possible. My sisters, boyfriends car is a 2004 malibu with an auto tranny and hes having some trouble. When he moves the shifter to put the car in gear it doesn't do anything. The car doesn't try to move and the rpms stay the same no matter what position the shifter is in. Is there some sort of linkage I should check out for him or something else I should look at? Hes 30 miles away so I'd like an idea of what to look for when I go look at it for him.
Thanks!!!
Thanks!!!

Lift hood, drivers side, look down just forward of brake booster. The linkage is on top of the transmission, have some one move the shift while some looks to see if it moves.
Sounds like broken cable.

There's also a TSB on this that was issued by Chevy for the '04s. Mine had the problem in '05. There's a pin in the shifter that comes loose and causes this problem. I don't remember all of the details as my dealer did the work. Chevy will probably fix it for free, if it's the TSB issue. Check this site and Edmund's for a thread on this issue.

Won't repair a TSB for free, only a recall.
