Ever wonder what goes into building a vehicle starting entirely from … nothing? Where do you start? What tools do you need?

To answer these questions, we invite you to check out our iNVision Prototypes facebook page! Once there, you'll discover how a vehicle goes from sketches to a full size scale drawings used to build a buck ... to finally fabricating the actual vehicle. You'll see how you can apply this process to any vehicle design your imagination can dream up.

Like us to participate in discussions, ask Nick about your vehicle design, customization and fabrication questions as well as get a bird's eye view of your newest 500+HP mid engine sports car we call R2 built from scratch.

R2's Design Overview

We don't build 'kit cars' ... and set the bar high when building custom vehicles. When everything is said and done, R2 will look as though it rolled off a factory production line. Since it's being built as a driver, the body will be crafted from sheet metal for a quality fit and finish thatleaves plastic, fiberglass, and carbon fiber constructed panels in the dust. You may be thinking "...what about the added weight of an all steel body?" Well, with approximately 6lbs/HP power to weight ratio the final weight will come in around 2800lbs. Not too bad for an all steel car!

Here are a few additional details:

Well, it's been a few extremely busy months...but we've been making some excellent progress with R2.

Thanks for all the great emails...we really appreciate your comments and enjoy answering your questions about R2's build progress.

Here are some photos of the build.

The wire frame buck is starting to take shape based on the 2D profile views created.

Passenger side butterfly door roughed in and opened using a single hinge pivot.

This english wheel is one impressive tool! Creating part of the rear 1/4's. The reversed curve fender flair is in, but we've lost some curvature in the horizontal plane...so a few more passes in the wheel to bring it back in.

Fitting the 1/4 to the buck.

Anyway, this was just a small taste of where things are. We've got over 200 other photos posted on Facebook for you to check out when you get a moment. Look forward to seeing you!

And with the roof topping off the build ... R2 is well underway. Now it's time to fit, weld and assemble the 68 panels.

As R2's body shell is coming together we are turning our attention to creating the plugs for the interior molds. Composite panels will then be taken from these molds.

The interior starts as a blank canvas with the medium changing from forming sheet metal to shaping foam. The process will involve creating a basis(plugs) for molds from foam, bondo and clay. It’s gonna be fun!

The floor pans have been pulled to gain access from the underside once the door shells are on.

We're having a lot of fun. Here's a sneak peak of the driver's side interior foam taking shape.

With a hand-crafted vehicle every single piece ... even the things no one sees ...is created by hand.

Here's a small insight into the rear hatch - A few sketches are created, followed by pressed paper templates and finally the metal forming itself...

After pieces are formed, overlapped and screwed together the section is installed for a trial fit.
http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g381/invisionprototypes2/R2/Body/INVR2-BodyFabrication292.jpg

Overlapped areas are trimmed away, sections butted together and welded.

A little hammer dollie work is necessary to clean up the welded areas.

...and finally finishing it off.

We're on the final stage with respect to assembling R2's body structure!

Once all the panels were created and buck was removed ... final assembly began followed by primering the structure.
