exhaust to downpipe

i have a 1998 cavalier i gave my son for his 16th birthday. My son drove over a train track to fast then about a hour later the downpipe separated from the exhaust manifold. i see no way of putting it back in without a seal i think. was there some kind of gasket between the two or how do i seal this thing. someone please help my son tone this thing down before they gave him a ticket for the noise. ty
