i have an '88 taurus that i'm attempting to change a faulty heater core on, and i can't seem to disconnect the two a/c lines going through the firewall. i bought a 'quick disconnect' tool from auto zone, but i can't seem to get it wedged under the flare of the pipe to hit the spring, seeing as there is no room against the firewall to get any kind of leverage. any help and/or advice is greatly appreciated. it's cold outside.

when you are using the quik disconnect tool also push in on the line while pressing in on the tool.

Last one did like that- had corrosion build-up in behind the spring- never did get it apart- after spending a half an hour trying and since I was changing the evaporator anyway- I cut the pipe off on evap side to discover the corrosion- I was replacing the accumulator as well- so it was no big deal--

Those are only quick connects- for use in the factory assembly plant-- no one ever said they were quick disconnects......

hatethewindstar, trust me, i've been tugging and pushing every which way. problem is, the removal tool won't slide in right.
brcidd, thank you for that info. if all else fails, that's the route i'll go and i'll cap the lines for now.

okay, so i bought the circular plastic pieces instead of using the crappy metal scissor tool. the plastic one worked immediately. glad i was able to get it loose and spare the a/c evaporator.

Use PB Blaster or WD 40 on the connections if they are dirty or not coming apart decent. Let the soak about 5-10 minutes.
