2004 Steering Rack Question

I have a 2004 GTP - Not the Competition Group. I know it has variable assist steering, I hit a pothole and it threw a "Service Variable Assist Steering" message on the DIC. The rack is leaking and needs to be replaced. My question is about MagnaSteer. I don't think the regular GTP has it, just the CompG - is that correct? Is there a way to tell for sure?

I'm pretty sure magnasteer came standard on 04+ GP's. You can check the rack near where the steering shaft connects. If it has an electrical connector, its a magnasteer.

Thanks for the input. There are 3 different racks listed as replacements on the 2004 Grand Prix- a regular rack, a variable assist rack, and a variable assist with magnasteer. In earlier years I think youre correct, but in 04, it looks like the split them up.

Hmmm, interesting, I did not know that. You could send Rich (richtazz) a PM with your vin, he might be able to help you out.

All supercharged GTP's that year came standard with variable rate steering, and for clarification, both the NV7 (variable) and NV8 (magnasteer) use the same rack and pinion.
