how do you know that the battery is good. the clicking and buzzing most of the time means low battery

CLICKING almost always means low voltage to the solenoid...
A GOOD BATTERY has closer to 13V at 2.2V per cell... when new, check connected, car off, and again disconnected if you need to...
POSITIVE LEADS can short to ground intermittently...even on a 3 year old
CLEAN CORROSION in battery cables and terminals and coat them with heavy grease to prevent further corrosion after cleaning with baking soda
CHECK TERMINAL at solenoid to see if it's connected hard and fast.
IT IS POSSIBLE the starter is bad and won't turn, or won't turn the engine...Remove starter and connect wires to see if the starter turns over. It could have dry or bad bearings, bad armature, bad springs, etc.
