cherokee will not take 4 wheel drive

i have a 1990 cherokee and yesterday the part time 4 wheel drive light came on just going down the road , so today i tried to put it in 4 wheel drive and it won't go just the back tires will spin. whats up with that. thanks for any help.

Sounds like the linkage might be out of adjustment...also being a 90 you may well have the vacuum-disconnect front axle, which may not be engaging properly.

If you have this axle, there will be a relatively large vacuum motor strapped onto the passenger side of your front axle....even if your transfer case is working properly, if that vacuum motor isnt doing its thing, it wont work.

found a broke vacuum hose. it was the yellow one going to the front axle.fixed that and it fixed my problem it takes 4 wheel drive great now. thanks littlehoov.
