99 alero 2.4 turns over won't start. Only code is u-1040 Loss off communication to ebcm (i know that Loss off communication to ebcm is code 1041 on most cars but that is what my solus pro said 1040-Loss off communication to ebcm)
My question is will that stop a car from running (spark/fuel) or am I getting sidetracked? Anyone fixed this problem? And can any of you fine men/women point me in the right direction? If it won't stop fuel or spark then that is all i need to know and I can move on to other possible culprits (module, CRK, or fuel pump?)

its actually an 01 alero and i just bypassed fuel pump with injector cleaner canister at 60 psi right after fuel filter. (With key on no fuel came out of pump) but that shouldn't matter as I was suppling the fuel right to the line.
did Ign module and plugs boots , cam and crank sensor and the fuel filter was clogged bad. But i don't see what is keeping it from opening the injectors. I have 12 v puling at injectors so r they just plugged that bad? that ecbm code is the only code i got. It will run for a second with a shot of ether so its got spark. I'm stumped? where is the modules? 1040 code is all it has?????

u1040 = Loss of Class 2 Communication with ABS

Which like you say should not keep it from starting.

The Injectors get B+ from the ignition switch. The PCM controlls the ground side of the injectors.

Did your battery recently die or get unhooked? Is your "security" light on or flashing? Do you have a different key you could try?

I am having a similar issue with a 2000 Alero. See my thread. Its sitting outside in a large snowbank, so I may hold off on diagnosis until spring time for mine.
