Transmission Fluid Level

I've always thought that tranny fluid level is measured with the dipstick with the engine running in Park. However, when I had the fluid changed on my 2000 Acura 3.2 TL, the mechanic, who claimed he previously worked for an Acura dealer for twenty years, said it should be taken with cold without the engine running. Any thoughts.

Honda/Acura transmission fluid levels are always checked with the engine off. Not sure why but it's the way it is. On a Civic or CRV for instance, with the engine running you could easily have the dipstick chewed up by the spining gears. I usually check them warm.

I the dip stick might read idle in park on some cars.
