sorry if wrong forum, don't know where this belongs
besides part of an auto insurance package and besides paying yealy 'just in case' like with AAA, what are my options for getting a cheap tow if needed?
basically, if i break down, i can park on the side of the road and call 411 information number and ask the operator for towing companies in the area and use the best priced, right? I mean AAA only gives 3 miles or so free and then it's ten cents a mile after that. It's cheap, but i never need use it so wanna cut expenses. thanks.
p.s. if i don't know what town i'm in or if i can't push my car to the shoulder and call 911 since i wouldn't know the local police dept. number, would that file under misuse of 911!?

Calling for a local tow might be the best option. You can call 911 and ask to be transferred to a non-emergency line. They (non emer) usually have a list of tow trucks in the area.

IME it's at least $50 --cash-- to be hooked up to the tow truck, and a lot more if it's a long tow. So if you have a car you're really worried about, maybe AAA is the best way to go.

I always use AAA (or here in Canada, it's CAA). I have an upgraded package. For $104 per year, I get up to 4 free tows. Each tow includes hook-up and up to 250 km tow (with dollies, if necessary) all included.

AAA may have such an upgraded package. Ask them.

Generally, I am not such a big fan of local towing companies. Some are honest, some are crooks.CAA is always honest and reliable.

For the cost of AAA, you not only get the towing, but you also get discounts at a remarkable number of places - not just hotels, but even at a lot of retail shops! Maybe if you checked that it might balance out the "cost" of the AAA membership?

Remember AAA covers you, not just the vehicle. So if you're riding with a friend and their car craps out, you guys are good to go.

If over 50, AARP,AAA, and insurance canbe discounted.
