Engine Won't Start '99 Suburban

The other night we were working on a '99 Suburban and had it running to help keep warm. While it was idling it started to run rough, so we assumed it needed gas. Put gas in tank and attempted to start again and now it won't start.

Have checked the (don't know the name) spider intake regulator and fuel is shooting from all 8 lines, fuel pressure is 62 at crank and 50 at rest, changed spark plugs and wires. We've dropped fuel in butterfly and it back fires. (Read on the forum that if fuel is dropped in butterfly and starts then it's not a fuel, but an electrical issue. What would the backfire mean?)

So...our next move was to replace dist cap. Any other suggestions of what to test/check or replace? We're trying to determine what would cause it to start running rough when idling. Anyway to check the timing chain or does it just need replaced?

Got good strong blue spark at the plugs? Also the dist gears were known for failing, which would knock out the ign timing.

Does it turn over at all?

If not smack the starter with a hammer then try to start it, that worked for my 99.

Needed to replace the starter.

Chasing down the problem we overlooked replacing the distributor cap. Started right up.

as mentioned the distributor on these old high mileage 5.7L engines has bearing wear causing rotor /cap problems ...make sure the distributor shaft it tight ..
