High Idle

In the morning, when the car is cold, I start it up and it revs up to 2 grand steady untill it warms up, then it rests about 1 1/4 grand, my throttle adjustment is a low as it can go...I never used to have this problem before. Anyone got any ideas? BTW I live in florida, so it can even be hot as hell outside, just as long as the motor has been sitting for a long time.

Let me ask a stupid question. When its revving high, if you pop the hood does the idle lower?


Also whens the last time youve given the car a complete rework (plugs, wires, new oil, blah blah blah) ??

Open the hood, nothing changes, but I changed my oil like 5 days ago, so it ain't that, but, the wires have never been replaced since i had it which was back in october, and the plugs around 4-5 months ago.

Try adjusting your throttle cable.

Mine is tuned to do that. When I start it up cold it revs really high then one it gets to a warm temp it resets back to low idle.

Just helps it warm up beter.

Well whatelse could it be then? Double check it. Thats what i did to mine.

If i loosen it, it won't do anything, the "butterfly" or whatever- is all the way closed...

how are your vacuum lines (connect from intake manifold to back of engine) ive heard cracked lines can cause a higher idle, i dont know if its true or not, but worth a look

when cold idle should be between 1,000-2,000rpm.

(warm)idle speed should be 625rpm +/-50rpm 1.5L, 550rpm +/-50rpm 1.6L with no load - no fan, lights, radio, etc.

adjust the idle by turning the idle adjusting screw not by the throttle cable. there should be a little play in the throttle cable. mine is as tight as it will go with out messing with the idle that i adjusted with the idle adjusting screw


check all of the vacuum hoses aslo

but yea, i wouldn't doubt one of my vaccum lines ain't on all that way or cracked or somethin

I had this problem with my SiR. The fast idle valve is stuffed. On the B16A it is located on the block under the intake manifold. Replace it and you should see a difference. The SiR would idle at 1600 and cold idle at 2800 - not good. Replacing it solved part of the problem, but I also had to replace the throttle body as the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) had been tampered with and you can't reset them outside of the factory.

You might like to give it a go - no promises, but I had the exact same problem and fixed it this way

One question, why the hell would i turn on the AC? That's like if you hear a nasty clunking noise under the hood, just turn the radio up. :finger:

usually a cracked vacuum hose will make a vacuum leak, which in turn will cause the idle to bounce up and down from about 1000-1500 rpm. Im with setanta.

hhhhhhmmmmmmm thats exactly what I did. I must have missed where some one said the throttle is adjusted w/ idle adjusting screw instead of the throttle cable:flipa:
