converting a Jota $5 kit

well, it's been many years since i last did any model work, but came across a $5 Jota model (airfix)
not the greatest quality kit, but the body seems correct in contours, a closed motorized intended kit, and also Jota
one of my all time favorites has been the Miura SV, and so i had originally planned to simply make this a closed curb-side Miura SV converted, but my inner detailer has gotten the better of me LOL
having to scratch build the chassis (exposed) and the engine + transaxle, the valve covers and carbs i molded/cast from a tamiya countach kit
colors will be rosso corsa red over blue leather interior
definitely WIP
enjoy

thanks, glad to finally have a reason to make a thread
i've seen a lot of great modelers threads on this site, really incredible work!
inspired me to do one or two models for my office, not done any for many years
i'll try and post some better pics with next update

hey, thanks man
a bit more ambitious then i had originally intended, lots to scratch-build, since the car came so basic, no engine or transmission, only a basic interior, no chassis or suspension at all
LOL i just need better pics!
lots of body work needed next, to ready for paint
tried a different camera, so hope these are better
ciao!

I agree. This is some impressive scratch-work. It just goes to show how far skills can take a crappy kit! But I simply can't fathom why you spent this much effort on an Airfix kit when you could have started with the Hasegawa for $20 more and had a Best of Show winner with half as much effort.

thanks guys
the chassis & engine/trans are entirely scratch built
i used a resin casting kit (for first time) to duplicate a few small parts (like valve covers) from a countach kit
the interior uses just the dash and seats, both very modified, the rest is scratch built too
i sure like the "make own PE parts" thread, hmm, i'm going to have to try that out at some point!
i never planned on this but it was on a $5 table at local hobby store clearance...so why not!?
i picked up another italian kit on the go too :iceslolan

well in my point of view, it doesn't matter if it's a $5, $500 or even for a free kit...
what's important is the kit now lies in the hands of a master grade builder, and that's you bro.
i'm also inclined to builds like this too, never want to build a car model that looked just like the same one as the guy next door...
novelty work here!
keep it up.:smokin:

i'm with you brother, and thanks for your generous comments
i've never made a model for contest, just built them for myself, same with this one, it's not going to be "perfect", but nice enough for me to enjoy looking at
cheers!

no, no worries...like i said, it was just sitting there on the clearance table, so i thought "why not"
maybe it's my cheapo nature, i can't justify a $140 kit, like the profil24 jag LD coupe
this build is admittedly low tech, no PE, starting with a very basic kit really, but i hope to redeem some virtue from it with a decent finished result
more pics
changing chassis and underbody details, rid of rivet seams, make smooth, triangulated front and rear subframes, add grill plates to door frame, redo upper door panel detail, add inner door handles

a few more pics
kit came without any rear bumper assembly (being a jota), so scratch built one
the lamborghini specific (wide octagon) grill material is to complex for building in this scope of project, so i used an octagonal grill mesh, it's close enough looking for me
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a82/jersturbo/scale_models/0022.jpg
front bumper, used same grill mesh (it'll be hardly noticable tucked underneath front bumper anyways)
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a82/jersturbo/scale_models/0032-1.jpg
interior updating, upper door skin height flush to side window, door handle assembly (later chromed)
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a82/jersturbo/scale_models/013.jpg
low tech (plastic) used to scratch make door grills, not as thin as PE so has 6 fins instead of OEM 7, but it will look well enough i think
opened bottom grill fin as door handle, and thumb press door lock set in
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a82/jersturbo/scale_models/009-1.jpg
pic of original box and instructions, to show how simple the original kit, different in appearance as jota vs. miura

Dude! You're preachin' to the choir - I'm the king of cheap. After grinding the resin out of some overpriced lumps I'll take a bargain-bin injected kit as a base any day. I'm planning a early street Miura build myself (I like the eyelashes around the headlights) and decided to use the Hasegawa as a base with the S27 photo-etch. The interior and tires in that kit are gorgeous. The S27 fret, though fiddly as hell, actually fits, or so I'm told. The engine is oversimplified and definitely a minus but I had planned to adapt the Fujimi engine as you did. Another great thing about Miura's are the wild body colors. It's like building something in Richtofen's Flying Circus.

P.S. Love your thread! Which version Miura are you building? Have you decided on a body color?

it's necessarily about being cheap.
i'm sure a lot of it is also to do with prefering to actually make/model/sculpt/whatever something.
some of the best fun i have with kits, especially older kits is filling in the missing or fixing the incorrect.
it's why transkits never really appeal to me because that would be taking away some of my fun.

sounds like a great project
i probably could have used brass to make the grill fins of the doors and hood, but it's done now LOL
being a jota, the body work only fits for an SV, which is my favorite anyways, so the changes are to match the SV (front bumper, interior, tail lights, etc.)
earlier miuras don't have the flared rear fenders, and other bodywork changes were made too
color is going to be a darker monaco red (none metallic), with the blue-grey interior (shown)
the engine i had to build 100% from scratch
i only used the countach kit to make molds for the valve covers (which i then cast), and i built the rest of the engine based around the valve covers (for correct scale)

what i mean, is that if the kit sitting there was a $70 H-kit, then i would likely not have picked it up
since it was a cheap kit sitting there, i picked it up for pocket change, and thus began the build
i don't expect to build many kits, a few of my favorites, but since i don't like pre-built metal display models, i'd rather have the few on my shelf to be ones i put together, and with enough detail to enjoy looking at
it's necessarily about being cheap.
i'm sure a lot of it is also to do with prefering to actually make/model/sculpt/whatever something.
