In Progress: Mercedes CLK-GTR

Hey, this is my first In Progress topic and my third car model ever. I got it off my friend who started it but didnt do a very good job. So I decided to take it off his hands and restore it.
Its a Tamiya Mercedes CLK-GTR...
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/388014box.jpg
...and so far everythings going good. I just finished priming the body but I think I need one more coat on the back part.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/437791primebody.jpg
The engine has finished soaking in its CSC bath and is now ready for its paint.

If the weather is nice I'll paint the engine and hopefully get it put together.
Sorry for the big pictures.

A word of advice, it would be better if you glue all body parts together before painting(especially the roof scoop which should not have a seam)you will get a sturdier model and less chance of getting glue on a painted body.

Alright thanks for the advice. I'll glue the other parts on tonight and but that second coar of Primer on tomorrow.

CSC(Castrol Super Clean)is a cleaner/de-greaser.

How fitting that Mr Schumacher begins with a Mercedes :D
Good luck with the build and not so good luck on the racetrack ;)

Well I was feeling sorry for Mercedes after loosing 3 races in a row so I thought it was the least I could do :D. Thanks, and by the way Michael doesnt need luck to win his races. Unlike that one guy Kimi ;).

I think you have a very short memory :p, either that or you are an imposter :o
Michael was a Mercedes protege in sportscars along with Frentzen and Wendlinger (who were alegedly quicker). MB even paid for his first F1 drive in the Jordan. He dumped them pretty quick after that though.
Yes Kimi does need luck to win races at the moment, hopefully that will change if the MP4/18 levels the playing field.
Very OT I know. :silly2:
Hey moderators can I change my nick to Marcus Gronholm? :silly:

Well so far Im pretty pleased with how everything is going. But before I paint the engine I got a question about paint colors. It calls for flat aluminum but I only have gloss will that be good enough or should I go and get some flat? Also my local hobby store doesnt have any Tamiya chrome silver so whats the next best thing?

1. No problem in using gloss alu. When the block in painted completely, you can overspray with matt varnish.
2. Humbrol 11 Silver should be good.

I love seeing these Tamiya GT1 kits. GT1 cars are the true epitome of top drawer Sportscar racing, as opposed to the screaming suppositories that are WSC/LMP900/SRP cars.
And I'd rather be Luca de Montezemolo, so I can boss Michael around, have a ton of cash and women, and build model Ferraris on the 12 inches to the foot scale. :D

I just finished doing the main painting of the engine. Now I just have to do some minor detailing on some of the parts. I'll have some pictures either a little later or tomorrow.

apart from the red of the air duct tubes being to dark imho, it looks like a nice restoration ;)

Yeah I know, I dont have and flat red in a spray can and the flat red in the bottle is to runny and doesnt go one nice. If I get some flat red I'll re-due it but for now its good enough.

Actually, shouldn't it be a dull orange. All the pics I've seen show it Orange.

they should be bright red orange and a touch of brown mixed in. To get a bright color you need a light basecoat(light grey or white). I brush painted mine with Tamiya Acrylics.

Lol, I used straight Tamiya Orange straight from the spraycan, then flat coat for mine. Looks like we got basically the same thing.:D
Here's mine. Sorry for the pic quality, but I didn't take it. It's from a website for a contest I entered it in. I got Third. :)

Well Ive finally started this project up again. I had to stop after finishing the engine because I ran out of semi-gloss black and money, and finals were coming up in school. Now that on my summer holidays I have lots of time to work on it. I have all the parts painted (except for the body) its all a matter of putting it all together now.

As you can see some decels are missing on some of the parts...
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/934174ChassisNoDecels.JPG
...they were lost after the soak in the CSC. I should have pretty much everything done tomorrow or monday. The bodys on hold till I find some flat aluminum.
