Its almost that time again. The Ferrari Expo 2011 will again be held near Chicago at Continental Autosports Ferrari/Maserati. We will be doing the regular high quality sportscar/racecar handbuilt model contest and photo contest. Added in 2011 will be a special Carrera Panamericana 1950-1954 model class for all scales. Due to popular demand we will add a 1/24th-1/20th open wheel class also. The date is not firm, but it looks like March 19th 2011 is a strong contender for the Expo. I will have a firm date in a few days. I will also post all the model classes when I get the date.
In 2010 we had several modelers come from as far away as Mexico and the west coast USA. I hope even more of you can make it in 2011.
Model Cars magazine should have a write up on the Ferrari Expo 2010 in the next issue.
Here is a link from 2010's model contest and the show overview:

I'll be there with hopefully 3 models, I just ordered 2 kits that will hopefully be a steal of the show :p
I was hoping to buy a R15+ and have it done for the show, but its not gonna happen, I'll just buy one from you Tom still

I will definitely be there again also, this is one of the "not to be missed" events on my calendar each year. Can't wait to see what everyone has been working on. Maybe I can get my R15+ done (if it ever gets here).

in just my honest opinion Tom.
I think the 1/24 should be split by Curbside and High Detail in category. just to make it more fair for everyone. there are great curbside kits that are there everyyear but get lots in the haze from the heavy detailing of engines and interiors with open doors and bonnets.
cheers,
Steve

Thanks Steve for your idea. Not sure what I will do yet. The Carrera Panamericana theme will be combined into the different scale classes.

Some of the cars that should be at Ferrari Expo 2011 are starting to show up. Here is one that should be on display on March 19th 2011. It is the Ferrari GT class winning 250 TDF from Lemans 1959. The dealership always fills the showrooms with vintage and new Ferrari's every year. This event also brings in some top quality models from around North America.
See you at the Ferrari Expo. Event is free to get in. Refreshments will be served. You can enter the model or photo contest, but we do have rules regarding the theme content of the entries as this is a racer/sportscar Expo.
New model releases will be on display from several model companies, along with "NEW" decals from Scale Designs.

Here are a few photos of my Ferrari 250 Breadvan in 1/12th scale that I am building for Ferrari Expo 2011. It is based on a Revell GTO diecast and the APM body kit. I had to do the following to the body so far:
Reshape all vents on the nose, add lower scoop and cutback headlights.
Make new engine cover so that it replicates the car as raced at Lemans in 1962.
Change location of vents on the side of both rear and front fenders.
Change location of vents on breadvan section behind doors.
Reshape roof to flatten and make less rounded.
Square out tail on sides.
Relocate rear wheel well back around 1/2 an inch.
Add corrected flares to rear fenders.
Remove flaring from front fenders.
Resize front wheel wells.
Open up vent behind front wheel on top.
Rescribe doors to move then up and make them slightly forward.
Lots more to do, but the body is close. The handlaced wire wheels can be found on Ebay.
The rears are for a GTO and are offered by Scale Details. They do require drilling out the centers so that they will let the spinner sit correctly. I also am redoing the cockpit to replicate the Breadvan's. Only the rear parts and door panels are included in the APM transkit(door panels are wrong). The Revell motor is a mess. I might add an engine at a later date, but the kit will be done as a curbside for the Expo.
Looks like another big group of modelers will be coming in for the show in March. Can't wait to meet you again. I am also doing several Carrera Panamericana cars for the event and Scale Designs is doing a few decal sheets for the PAN AM Porsches to debute at the Expo.

Hi f1tommy. It is an impressive work you've done with that breadvan, practically a whole new model I would say!
I would like to see it when finished, and I would also like to see your panamericana Porsches.
I'm currently "reworking" the bodywork on the Profil24 model, wich really disappointed me.
I am also looking forward to build some 550 spiders, preferably also Panamericana versions, but I have had no luck in finding decals for these, please let us know when Scale designs is ready to market their own.
And how about decals for the early 356 models that also raced in the Panamericana? could it be that there will be any decals for these?:smokin:

I think you will be happy with the new Pan Am sheets. I have been waiting for these cars to be done in 1/24th scale for years. I hope no one else rushes around and does the same cars now that I am doing them(The model industry is like that). I will be doing 2 or 3 decal sheets for several marques. None have been done before in 1/24th scale and several have never been done in any scale. I might also do a kit for another Pan Am car in the future.
I am suprised at how inaccurate some of the 1/43rd model kit decals are with BBR/Project 43 coming to mind. What a mess they made of several of the old Porsche's.

I doubt if Strada will come as he only does NNL's and shows in his area. I should be getting all the latest kits from him and another person to sell on consignment. I will also have some hard to find new kits for sale and a few new decals from Scale Designs. I have to say this show is more about the built models and real Ferrari's than vendors(some of the nicest built ups and Ferrari's you will find anywhere). I still manage to get some of the latest kits that nobody has in the USA for sale at the Expo:)

As for the decals, you have a client here!
It would be nice if you could show us here some pictures of the original cars that can be built based on the new decals, assuming you don't want to reveal their final aspect yet, and surprise everyone in March!:grinno:

Almost done with the first 2 Pan Am cars. The Fujimi 356 is in 1/24th scale and uses the Scale Designs SD38 decals printed by Cartograf, the 550 is 1/43rd using an old Starter kit modified.
I am also finishing the Breadvan and 2 or 3 other Pan am cars.

They look absolutely great Tom! and I'm really happy that we can now have proper decals for these cars.
As an admirer of the great Panamericana, I happen to have both these kits, and will obviously consider building them in this livery.
Would you consider a practical "how-to" building process on the improvements you have included in the early spider? I would have an interest in it, and I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one.
I will be looking forward to more of your future builds, since we happen to have quite similar likes when it comes to vintage Motorsports. And of course, will be waiting for a nice photo-review of this year's Ferrari Expo.( pretty please?)...:naughty:
Loved the idea for both decals on the future moebius Hudson, and Quattroruote Alfa as well!
My best regards, and please keep up the good work.

Thanks...I think you will love these Pan Am decals. The artwork and printing are as nice as you can find.
On the 550 I changed the lights and wheels. The body had to be lifted in the rear and under the door sills it had to be sanded at a slight angle. I also drilled out all the vents and grill.
I do not plan on making the Hudson Canada as the kit is for the wrong year. I am doing the Alfa 1900 Pan Am 1954 now(for Quattroruote diecast) and will do more 356's on sheet 3 including the Peron car. We also have a few other cars we are working on.

Hi,
I should be able to get one from Strada for the show. They are sending me a bunch of the new kits to sell so I will make sure they send an R15.
Here is a photo of the 1/12th scale Ferrari 250 Breadvan. Still alot of things to do on it.

Sweet!!! Those decals came out awesome!!! Nice job with that Starter 550 too... I usually prefer the BBR 550's because I like their shape better. Your body work made a great improvement and has me taking a 2nd look at the Starter 550's I have. Hope to see you at the expo:wink:
Almost done with the first 2 Pan Am cars. The Fujimi 356 is in 1/24th scale and uses the Scale Designs SD38 decals printed by Cartograf, the 550 is 1/43rd using an old Starter kit modified.
I am also finishing the Breadvan and 2 or 3 other Pan am cars.

I love that blue cab. I have pics of that car with both blue and white engine lids. Did they run that car 2 years or was that a mid race swap???
I'm working on a Bosica 356 that I removed the roof and added a split window windshield... It would look awesome in that livery:iceslolan
BTW What are the hours of the show??

Hi Joe,
As far as I can tell they tested the car before the race with the Mercedes Benz team without the car completely painted. During the race it ran as shown with white engine cover. That chassis only ran in 1952 and is the only Porsche 356 cabriolet to run in the Pan Am.
The show hours are 9AM-4PM. You can come in early as they open the doors around 8AM. Hope you bring some of your great models next Saturday. I would love to see them in person. They look amazing.

I had never even heard of APM before, please let us know if you do find out more about the story on this manufacturer.
As to your model, it just looks great! :smooch:
You should not have told us it is a scale-model!...you would have fooled many of us!
That is the "magic" of such large scales, when many little things such as clear parts (glasing) wire wheels, chrome trimming and other, are naturally "brought down" to proper scale in harmony with the whole model. It just makes the models much more realistic!
The only disadvantage is, their size!:banghead:
I'd really like to try and build something like this one day, it looks real!
Best to you Tom. Please keep up the good work.

What a great show!!! I have'nt been to a good gathering since the computer came along. Very cool to check out some awesome builds in person and meet their builders. There was a good vendor turn out who were all friendly and fun to say Hi too... A few had some kit's, Tom had a bunch of good kit's in all scales, lot's of Ferrari books & lit. On top of that this was at the best model venue I've been to. The staff at this place were super!!! I loved being able to roam the garage of this place where the cars were displayed. I was also honored and thrilled to receive some awards for my model. Looking forward to next year and I'll plan better:grinyes:

Thanks Joe. I think everybody had a good time. The weather was good and they had plenty of exotic real cars to look at along with all the great models. Your model was stunning and deserved "Best of show" as much as any model I have ever seen!! The show is all about quality not quantity. I hope we have even more builders from Mexico again next year.
They add fresh top talent not seen in this country very often. It also was great to see some new young builders enter the contest for the first time.
Their models would make anyone proud!!

Hi,
I saw the Enzo MIG recently, the kit looks good, well done.
The mastermodel must have been good but I have seen better resinparts.
At the chassis at lots of areas some holes (?) were repaired with automotive putty and sanded very rough.
BBS wheels look great but need lots of cleaning. The tires are just slicks (made of resin), no street tires in the box.
All parts seem to fit well, so for Ferrari-tuning enthusiasts for sure a must have.

With all the new books/videos and decals coming out for the original Carrera
Panamericana I have decided to continue the Carrera Panamericana Ferrari Expo
model contest theme for 2012. Hopefully some of the models that were not
finished this year can be in the contest in 2012. I am working on the 1952 and
1954 winners in 1/24th scale and I know Kaz is still doing the 1954 250 Monza
Hotel Prado car in 1/43rd. By then I hope to have 2 more decal sheets for the

Coming in mid March 2012 is Ferrari Expo 2012. Date TBA.
Start making your sportscar/racecar models now!! The event will again be held at Continental Autosport Ferrari/Maserati. This years model theme will be Carrera Panamerica along with Targa Florio/Mille Miglia and endurance road racing. We will also have a special F1 model class. THIS EVENT IS OPEN TO ALL SPORTSCAR MANUFACTURES, NOT JUST FERRARI'S.
Top quality model builders from as far away as central Mexico and from New Jersey to Washington state came in for the event last year.
Hope some of you can make it again this year. This is a very high quality event with several real vintage Ferrari's always on display. Last year we had the 1959 250 TDF Lemans 1959 GT winner and Alfa TZ1 competitione as the featured display cars. Some might have also liked the 599 GTO and the other pre 1975 Ferrari's on display.
