Popping/snapping noise from front end

Here we go again.
Weill my ZJ (98 Grand Cherokee 5.9Limited) started having an issue with some noise, sounds like the front axle, snapping/popping when in 4WD and turning. Last winter was fine, I had noo problems at all. Back in july I had to barrow a friends trailer and put it in 4WD to get out of his backyard, didn't want to tear it up and I noticed a loud popping/snapping noise when I was turning and pulling forward or reverse, pulled it out in his drive, put it back in 2WD, looked at the CV joints - didn't notice any torn boots or anything obvious so I thought heck with it I will check it out some other time, well I forgot about it until now, we got our first real snowfall here in western PA, nothing major but did remind me about my 4WD issue.

Anyone have any ideas?

I know I commented on another thread about this noise (someone else was having) but at that time the noise I was having (in my old ZJ) wasn't anything like this, it sounds like something is going to break....

If yours is the same quadra track as mine its probably your transfer case popping (the chain is loose) does it pop when you pull a hill or when you accelerate hard? I eventually just took the front drive shaft out since it was auto-4x4. never fixed it just got rid of it. hope this helps in narrowing your search

No I don't have quadra-trac, I have select-trac.
But it end up being my right front AXLESHAFT, the boot came off and lost all the grease.
