'96 Town Car Trunk auto-assist malfunction

Sorry 'bout the consecutive posts... It's funny how when one thing breaks on a car, a bunch of other stuff seems to follow(!)

1st the a/c went out AND the drivers' window stopped working, at the same time... Then she failed her emissions test... NOW the auto-assist trunk latch isn't working properly!

Under normal operation, you press the trunk lid down lightly and the 1st latch engages, then an electric motor pulls it down the rest of the way. The 1st latch IS engaging, so the trunk is essentially locked-- It just doesn't close all the way now.

The funny thing is, the first few days it did that, I'd leave it alone for the night, and by morning it will have gone down all the way. This happened three or four times. Now, after about a week, it has totally stopped working.

I already checked ALL the fuses under the drivers' kick-plate.

The battery was dead for about 6 weeks but the trunk was fully closed during that time. That wouldn't have anything to do w/ it... Right?

I've read that the plastic tab that commands the ON/OFF function when the trunk lid pushes it down. Take a look at it.

Best reards,

Oscar.

Off topic.- what happened with the emissions test?.

Yeah, I already looked at the tab... It seems to be fine.

RE:emissions
Still haven't had a chance to drive her. I've just been way too busy w/ other stuff.

Try removing the tab from the motor assembly, it only takes one Torx type screw. Inspect it and give a good squirt with electrical contact cleaner or some other non-residue cleaner. Clean below the tab and at the small toggle switch next to it, move them from one side to the other.

You can also test the motor by running a pair of wires from the battery to the pins on top of it once you have removed the tab.

Best regards,

Oscar.
