Connect a bi-directional scanner to monitor the TCC lockup circuit while driving. The operation of the TCC should closely coincide with the TCC solenoid actuation. The solenoid pulses rapidly to slowly bring the converter clutch into lockup so as to prevent a harsh engagement, so it can be difficult to detect lockup by feel.
A tachometer can also be helpful in diagnosing the TCC operation.

sorry im late with this but my tranny mech. drove it and told me he could tell by watching the tac while it made a new noise, whirring sound , thta 4th gear was gone. does that make sense to you? should i relent to a rebuild? it has 117k and has not been touched.

have a torque converter problem on my 2006 SV6...mech is referring me to a tranny guy; it was doing the surge thing, and the tac would show and you could feel it as the descriptions above...they have to pull the tranny to fix the tc...will keep you posted - gotta get it done, and at 117 thousand kilometres, no warranty...

Just a heads up....are you sure you are not feeling a misfire?
A R/T with a scan tool, will either show misfire or slippage....
