This is my first time to make a junker model. Something I've always wanted to do and I'm having a blast with it. It's nice to be able to screw up for a change and not have to stress over it.
Had to go with something old so I chose this Revell 1941 Chevy. I'm using a rusting technique that I found on youtube. Worked great and it looks amazing.
Hope I didn't go too much with the rust, lol.

Comments Welcome!

It looks great, maybe a tad bit to much surface rust though. Especialyl since there are no rust holes, which i would expect with that much rust ;).

I believe a fellow forum modeller, Modeljunkyard, has quite the few tips for you on rusting etc.

But keep it up, for a first rustbucket you did one hell of a job :D

This project is going to be put on hold because my Mother decided she wanted one for Christmas but with red instead of the blue. Going to have to steel a few parts from the blue one to get it done on time but no problem.
I figured I would go ahead and make this a small tutorial too.

first with the body work, I took advice from a previous comment and added some rust holes/damage. also added some dents here and there by heating the plastic with a lighter and pushing them in with a pen.

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s32/mustangemd19/1941%20chevy%20pickup/IMG_3653.jpg

I used these two products to make the rust. One is the iron surfacer and the other is a rusting solution.

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s32/mustangemd19/1941%20chevy%20pickup/IMG_3659.jpg

First apply the iron surfacer wherever you want the rust to be.

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s32/mustangemd19/1941%20chevy%20pickup/IMG_3654.jpg

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s32/mustangemd19/1941%20chevy%20pickup/IMG_3655.jpg

Once the iron surfacer is dry, paint rubber cement on the areas where you dont want the paint to stick.

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s32/mustangemd19/1941%20chevy%20pickup/IMG_3657.jpg

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s32/mustangemd19/1941%20chevy%20pickup/IMG_3660.jpg

After the rubber cement is dry, paint the body.

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s32/mustangemd19/1941%20chevy%20pickup/IMG_3671.jpg

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s32/mustangemd19/1941%20chevy%20pickup/IMG_3669.jpg

Next is to give the paint a faded look. I tried looking for other ways to do this with no luck, so I made my own method.
I used acrylic craft paints. These are usually the cheapest paints in the hobby store. They work great for this because they can be easily wiped off.
I used a mixture of yellow and white, painted it on, and rubbed it in with my finger.

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s32/mustangemd19/1941%20chevy%20pickup/IMG_3683.jpg

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s32/mustangemd19/1941%20chevy%20pickup/IMG_3689.jpg

It's hard to see in the picture so here's a side by side

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s32/mustangemd19/1941%20chevy%20pickup/IMG_3681.jpg

Then use tape and peel the paint off where the rubber cement was applied. this gives it a realistic look. make sure all of the rubber cement is removed or it will leave un-rusted spots when you put the rusting solution on.

Next step is to apply the rusting solution where the iron surfacer is.

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s32/mustangemd19/1941%20chevy%20pickup/IMG_3691.jpg

After the solution is applied place all the parts in a plastic bag and let sit over night.

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s32/mustangemd19/1941%20chevy%20pickup/IMG_3708.jpg

when it comes out the model should be pretty well rusted. If there are spots however that dont look quite right, go over them again with the iron surfacer and repeat the process.

After the rusting was finished I decided to make the door and panel lines look real. So again with the cheap acrylics I made a mixture of brown and black. I panted the lines and wiped them clean. Also used it on other parts of the body to help with the fading paint effect. just like i did with the white and yellow mixture.

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s32/mustangemd19/1941%20chevy%20pickup/IMG_3697.jpg

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s32/mustangemd19/1941%20chevy%20pickup/IMG_3698.jpg

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s32/mustangemd19/1941%20chevy%20pickup/IMG_3699.jpg

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s32/mustangemd19/1941%20chevy%20pickup/IMG_3700.jpg

and the doors after the same step.

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s32/mustangemd19/1941%20chevy%20pickup/IMG_3704.jpg

Next I got to work on the wood truck bed.
Started with the acrylics again (my new favorite paint) mixed yellow and orange, and painted the wood with it.

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s32/mustangemd19/1941%20chevy%20pickup/IMG_3709.jpg

then i painted it with brown acrylic

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s32/mustangemd19/1941%20chevy%20pickup/IMG_3712.jpg

masked off the wooden sections.

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s32/mustangemd19/1941%20chevy%20pickup/IMG_3714.jpg

and after silver paint
http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s32/mustangemd19/1941%20chevy%20pickup/IMG_3716.jpg

After I added iron surfacer in places and the rustin solution this is what it looked like.

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s32/mustangemd19/1941%20chevy%20pickup/IMG_3724.jpg

did the rims and tires with much of the same techniques.

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s32/mustangemd19/1941%20chevy%20pickup/IMG_3723.jpg

and this is what it currently looks like.

nice project. the same is waitin in my model stash.
but
creating good rusting with these rusting powders are not good enough for our scale i think. you also dont have total control of whole process. it is much better in my opinion and experience to use weathering techniques commonly used on military subjects and model railroad. believe me, nothing can compare to them. (salt methode, hairspray technique, wash, drybrush, fading, streaks, pigments, chipping, filters... )
