Alternator Removal Question

94SL with 108k.
I have a pronounced squeaking sound coming from the alternator. I know it is this because I squirted just a bit of wd 40 behind the pulley and it stopped momentarily. Of course the bearings are going bad.
I need to know, how difficult is it to replace the alternator in these cars. Does it involve going through the same procedure as changing the belts and whatnot?? If not, is there an outline of the procedure somewhere on the net that someone knows about?
Thanks,
Dave in NC

are you sure its not the belt squeaking.remove the belt & spin alt to see
if you hear or feel anything from the alt bearing
as far as replacing the alt should be straight forward remove belt, wires ect.
but dont no the set up, auto zone should have procedures

The alt bearings are inside the alt so if its anything on the alt, its the pulley. I would bet its the belt squeaking.
If it is the alt then it depends on if its a DOHC or SOHC on how hard or easy removal is.

Thanks guys regarding the heads up on the belt squeaking. Doesn't sound like it though. I'll certainly check before buying a new alternator.

check all pulleys/tensioner while the belt is off

for me in my 93 3kgt sl i had to remove the tensioner and then the radiator to have enough clearance for the alternator to be removed from the top

That's interesting Bob. Hopefully, there is a difference in the 1st and 2nd generation in this regard and I don't have to do that. As it stands now, I am going to wait for warmer weather before I do anything.

Removal of the rad is not necessary, but removal of the drivers side fan makes things easier.
