gear box short commings

I`ve tryed looking this up in up searches with no luck.Is there any way of making a steering gear box better then what the stock one are? They say the boxes only last 55,000 miles on average.I don`t want to put another one in 50,000 agin. What is the problem with them in the first place.(Tire Eaters for sure)
