heater question

So in my 89 century the heat is not so great. The farther you push the gas down the better. The coolant is full and it doesn't really get warm. Any way to check the heater core? I don't see any leaks from the passenger side. The hoses don't appear to be leaking. Any other ideas?

Replace your thermostat .

feel both heater hoses they should be the same in temperture if not
its a restricted heater core.but if the coolant is'nt getting hot enough
thermostat could be stuck open

Since increasing engine speed seems to help with the heat situation I'd say it does sound like either a restriction problem with the heater core (may be able to backflush it for a short term solution) or a flow issue. In the Taurus there have been issues with galvanic corrosion dissolving the impellers on the water pump. I don't know if you Century may be afflicted with a similar problem.

all the hoses felt the same temp but i always thought one was cold. or is that when the air is running? how does the thermostat affect the heater?

the thermostat is designed to open at a certain temp ie 160,180,195 degrees
if thermostat sticks open then water/coolant cant get to said temperture
causing warm coolant temp instead of getting hot
