Odyssey wheels and TPMS

Hello,

I have a 2008 Honda Odyssey LX plain jane with 35+K mileage. Since the snow is almost here, it's time to get snow tires.

Instead of buying new tires and installing them on the factory wheels, it has aluminum 235/65R16 wheels with the TPMS sensors inside, why not get a used set of black steel wheels, insert valve stems in them and put the new tires on them. Thus I'd be able to change them over myself without paying for it twice a year. The only question I have is, has anyone done this and does it matter with regards to the TPMS? If it is inconsequential and only means that a dash light will be illuminated during Winter, I can live with that. If it has other adverse effects to the system, I'd like to know that as well.

The thought of bringing the vehicle in and watching a 7 dollar an hour tech pull the tires off the rim w/o noticing the 100 dollar sensors and damaging them, makes me cringe.

If anyone has already done this, please let me know what the pros and cons are. Thanks.

If the low tire light doesn't bother you just go without them. It's gonna get real expensive with another set of wheels, snow tires, and tire pressure sensor(worst invention ever). Before getting wheels from the junk yard check your local Honda dealer or even one of the Honda parts stores online such as www.hondaautomotiveparts.com Steel wheels for my '05 Accord EX are $58 from the dealer we deal with and no shipping. While the junk yard wants $55 per wheel. I will gladly pay $12 for brand new wheels that I know won't be bent, rusted, or jacked up in any other way.

Thanks for the tips Bull. In my experience, the dealer has been the most expensive. BUT I will say, there have been a couple of times this wasn't true. It surprised me really. I don't mind having the sensors in there and I agree with you that they were just another add on that costs the consumer more $$. Realistically, who needs them anyway.

I was looking at used ones online for almost 65 apiece so if they come new from the local dealer for the same, I'm there. I'll have to check that website and see what's available. Appreciate the info.

Each sensor is $48.29 each! What a joke....a "valve stem" cost more than a wheel...$48.29 is cheap for a sensor. We have broken a sensor and it was $120, can't remember which car.
