Is Acetone a good choice for airbrush cleaning? or should I only stick with lacquer thinner?

ok, but isn't the acetone is less harmful and economical then lacquer thinner for airbrush cleaning?

Dude stop and spend the extra money for the right thinner. A long time ago i tried using acetone to strip a paint job and guess what it melted the whole model in the matter of an hour. To the point that i couldn't even fix it, melted the plastic really bad!!

in that case i might stick with lacquer thinner or some kind of airbrush cleaner.

Same here, bad choice that acetone. I had to throw away a whole RX7 body.
I use those big bottles of Revell AMG. Not too expensive (at least here in BE) and you can use it for quite a while.

Laquer thinner sold in most hardware stores is just plain cheaper and more effective at cleaning all types of paint except the water based Acrylic paints. For the Acrylics flush the airbrush with water then run some 70% or preferrably 91% alcohol through it. Ammonia can also be used to clean the Acrylics but water should then be used to rinse the airbrush as ammonia after awhile will start to eat the metal parts of the airbrush. Using expensive thinners and reducers to just clean the airbrush is a waste of money.

Go to any automotive paint suppliers and buy 5 litres of cheap lacquer thinners. It's sometimes referred to as simple 'Gun wash' it will last you a very long time. I bought one 3 years ago and it's still going strong. I just have a smaller bottle that I keep filling from the larger one....

For cleaning up after acrylics, the best, cheapest and most easily accessible cleaner I have found is Mr Muscle (or similar) household window cleaner.

I use acetone all the time for cleaning purposes. It wipes out acrylics, laquers and 2k and it is cheap as chips.

Mr Muscle is OK and less harmfull but not as quick and hot as acetone.

Any problem with using acetone? will it damage the o-ring inside the airbrush?

No problem with orings. I have ABs Tamiya, Iwata and Gunze and all of them have been treated with acetone without any issues.

I would not worry. Do not bath them in acetone :) just clean them well.

Just use the regular cheap cellulose/lacquer thinner or 'gun wash' as it's commonly known and it will remove all traces of the 2K. Just make sure you flush it out straight after use before it 'goes off' in the airbrush...

Just a quick note to those thinking of using "acetone" for a reducer/thinner - acetone softens - melts plastic chemically and as a minimum will cause crazing of the smooth plastic surface found used with models - Laquer thinner can also craze plastics so make sure you use a primer undercoat. I have used regular lacquer thinner for reducing/thinning Alclad and other automotive finishes that are lacquer based - it can be found at auto paint distributors or even "Walmart" here in the USA very cheap around $10.00 a gallon - a one gallon can will last a long time. I also use this same lacquer thinner to clean my AB guns regardless of what was sprayed because lacquer thinner evaporates leaving a residue free finish in the AB provided you don't leave the lacquer thinner standing in the AB to denature as Steve Noble has mentioned before in this thread - John
